(At the conference hall: a beautiful cinema)
Last week, I was engaging in a discussion on a Facebook Group and a friend highlighted an interesting deal on a conference pass in my town: 140 / State of Now Conference. I have never heard of this social media conference before and I was curious to learn more. Since there are few social media conferences in my town and since I want to connect with other bloggers, I purchased the pass and headed to the conference.
What is the 140/ State of Now Conference
It is a social media conference where the community can connect, share and engage with each other on social media topics and their impact on business.
It wasJeff Pulver’s, the founder of 140 Conferences worldwide, intention to provide a platform for as many people as possible to share their thoughts and engage in conversation with the attending delegates. Source. When I read this I was not so sure about it. Why would I attend this conference?
The conference was geared towards business owners, Entrepreneurs, Sales Executives, Directors, Vice-Presidents, and Managers who want to improve their organization’s Social Media awareness and proficiency, and learn from others attending the 140Conf Montreal. It was not intended for bloggers!! But the thought of connecting with other bloggers in real life other than through Facebook chat or tweets was so tempting that my hesitation lasted only a few minutes.
A great experience:
Chut, we are tweeting
I am glad I went. It was a great learning and inspiring experience. I met with great people in my community. I was happy to connect with other bloggers who happen to be my neighbor.I was inspired by the speeches. I was happy to discuss topics in real life other than tweets or Facebook. Since it is a social media conference, everybody was tweeting during the conference. The chat was so intense that we were asked to reduce the pace. It was a bit funny because I was tweeting with people sitting next to me during the conference!
The conference was fast paced. Each speaker was allowed 10 to 15 minutes, which was great because you have diverse subjects. Here are some inspirational ideas and great thoughts about social media and engaging with your audience:
- Talking about social media crisis management: Never delete comments when they are on your page. Manage and respond from @adviso
- Over 50% of Quebec firms have no social media presence @exostarno. It was amazing to learn that in my own province, companies do not have an important online presence.
- Ask yourself what kind of information I want to share, who I want to share with and where are the people I want to share with @MorberMarketing
- Social media is about relationships and listening from @Tedrubin
I highly recommend attending conferences if you want to connect with your community. It is a great way to share ideas, learn new things and have an interesting talk with other people. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, bring your business cards and your phone chargers.
