4th of July for Kids | activities for kids

While holidays such as Christmas or Halloween seem tailored to capture the imagination and excitement of children, celebrations such as the Fourth of July are not as instantly appealing to kids. However, with a little creativity and planning this Independence Day can be memorable and fun for kids of all ages. Here are a few do-it-yourself ideas to get you started on creating a Fourth of July celebration that will be a blast!
Make History Fun

Find ways to teach kids about the history behind the Fourth of July in a way that is fresh and fun. Create a treasure hunt. Each clue can incorporate or include an Independence Day fact or piece of trivia information. Older kids might enjoy an online or library scavenger hunt where they search for specific facts or answers to questions regarding topics like the Declaration of Independence or the Liberty Bell.

Red, White, Blue and Costumed!

Turn up your Fourth of July celebration by making it a costume party. Work with your kids to design easy costumes that can be created at home. Statue of Liberty garb can easily be put together with construction paper, a sheet, and maybe even some face paint. United States icons such as Uncle Sam or the Bald Eagle may also be fun costume ideas. Encouraging kids to choose historical costumes like George Washington or Betsy Ross can even give you further opportunity to talk about the historical importance of Independence Day to our country.

Splatter Paint Fireworks

Organizing Fourth of July themed craft projects that involve the whole family is a great way to bring everyone together for a fun holiday memory. You can create splatter paint fireworks on a black asphalt driveway with just cornstarch, water, and food coloring! Create the washable paint by combining equal parts cornstarch and water and then adding food coloring to the mixture. Using medium sized paintbrushes (about the size you would use for painting window trim), dip the tips into the paint and splatter it along the asphalt surface. Use a variety of colors to create a masterpiece that will rival the fireworks display in the night sky.

Independence Day Cookies

Use rollout sugar cookie dough, white frosting, and summer berries to make delicious and patriotic treats to add to your menu for the day. Pre-made dough can be purchased in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores or you can easily make your own. Help your kids roll out the dough and cut it into star shapes. After baking and cooling the cookies, they can be frosted with fluffy white frosting from a can. Let the kids decorate the cookies using blueberries and strawberries.
