Beware of Reaching for the Golden Nugget

Most of us are familiar with the saying, “money doesn’t bring us happiness.” Still, we need enough money to pay our bills and support our family.  So how do you view your income?  Is your income a means to an end?  Or, do you believe attaining a higher income will reward you with a life of true satisfaction and happiness?  Is a higher income your golden nugget?

Beware of reaching for that golden nugget.  A higher income does not necessarily equal happiness.  Studies conducted in 2004 and 2005 by researchers at Princeton University concluded that those with higher incomes do not necessarily spend more time in enjoyable ways.  Please ponder over some of their other discoveries:

  1. The researchers found that those with above-average incomes are barely happier than others in moment-to-moment experiences.  They do not spend more time in enjoyable activities and tend to be much tenser.
  2. Researchers discovered that women in lower income brackets spent less time in a bad mood than those women in a much higher income bracket.
  3. The studies also showed that those with higher income spend a considerable more time in commuting to work, childcare, shopping, or other obligatory activities; and they spend less time in passive leisure activities such as socializing or watching TV. 

I don’t know about you, but this information although a few years old is even more relevant today than when it was written.  Millions of people unemployed, under-employed, or currently employed can be happy despite their current economic situation.  If you stop reaching for that golden nugget, time will be on your side.  Use your extra time to “smell the roses” and enjoy life.  

Having less money or a lower income should not correspond to gloom and doom.  Read the Seven Blessings of the Unemployed at  The Every Day Life of the Unemployed; and beware of the golden nugget.  A special note: This doesn’t mean that everybody should go out and quit their current job!
