With awards season barely past us, we’ve been inundated with all the hot new glam styles of the stars. From stunning Red Carpet dresses to behind-the-scenes looks of celebs chilling in comfy clothes, we’re all feeling a little fashion-backward these days. Add to that the fact that it’s almost spring (YAY!) and you may find yourself glaring into your closet with nothing to wear! While most of us can’t spend a fortune on designer garb, we can do the next best thing: design our own clothes!
Now, I’ve had a sewing machine for well over a decade now, but I have no idea how to use it! Sure, I can sew a sort-of-square pillow but that’s about it. I’ve always wanted to take a sewing class. Unfortunately, in my area they are both expensive and held at totally inconvenient times. I just never got around to it. Thanks to the internet and Craftsy, though, I don’t need to worry about finding time for sewing classes. I can take one on my own schedule! By the time I’m done learning, I’m hoping to be able to make my own wardrobe and dress like the stars for less.
Favorite Craftsy Sewing Classes for Beginners
Sew Ready: Machine Basics : You can’t start sewing until you understand the basics of your machine, right? The first time I threaded my machine, it took me a good two hours. Two hours! I just couldn’t seem to figure out how the thread went through all the different parts. The best part? This class is free! I think it’s the perfect place to start, both for getting familiar with your machine and seeing how Craftsy classes work.
Sew Ready: Garment Basics : Instructor Bret Bara takes you through all the basic steps of creating your own gorgeous A-Line skirt, from choosing the fabric to putting it all together. She’ll even teach you different variations to help you make it a totally unique design. Why dress like the stars when you can learn how to be a design star yourself!
Fast-Track Fitting: One of the most important parts of dressing like the stars is to get that perfect custom fit that they all have with their clothes. You want your clothes to look like they’re made for you in a good way, not in a “clearly made by a novice” way! This class will teach you all the ins and outs of getting just the right fit.
