Pregnancy Books for First Time Moms
THE HEALTHY PREGNANCY BOOK: Month by Month, Everything You Need to Know from America’s Baby Experts
This book by Dr. William and Martha Sears is part of the fantastic Sears Parenting Library of books. Of all the pregnancy books out there, it’s my absolute favourite. Formerly called The Pregnancy Book, this new edition came out in 2013. The authors have eight children and he is a doctor and she is a nurse, so they have plenty of first-hand knowledge! In addition, the book is peppered throughout with real, scientific research.
The Healthy Pregnancy Book takes you month-by-month through your pregnancy, answering all the questions you have about your baby’s development, your own body’s physical and emotional changes, medical technology you might need during pregnancy and childbirth, how to prepare for labour and delivery, and those first days at home with your new baby. You’ll love the Sears’ warm, conversational style as you curl up with this book throughout your pregnancy!
PREGNANCY, BIRTH AND THE EARLY MONTHS: The Thinking Woman’s Guide
In this book, Dr. Richard Feinbloom, a doctor in family practice, offers answers to most of the questions you will have before, during and after your baby’s birth. He discusses the many options available based on research for common and also more uncommon conditions you may encounter. Pregnancy, Birth and the Early Months includes information on prenatal testing, genetics, nutrition, medications during pregnancy, labor support and pain relief, prematurity prevention, C-sections, the advantages and disadvantages of medical technology, and more. Get all the facts so you can make your own decisions.
PEA IN A POD: Your Complete Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Beyond
Linda Goldberg, a childbirth educator and lactation consultant is the author of this comprehensive guide for parents. In an authoritative tone, she covers conception all the way through childbirth and your baby’s first months. You will get month-by-month information on the physical and emotional changes your body will go through during pregnancy, and the dos and don’ts of intimacy with your partner during and after pregnancy. There are hundreds of hints and tips for the new mom and for the dad-to-be. This is an extensive, detailed book, so if you’re the type of person who finds too many details overwhelming, you may want to try another book instead.

I’ve been wanting to check out The Kind Mama by Alicia Silverstone – it just came out.
Thanks for these great resources! As a preemie mom, I found the following book to be a great resource, especially during our 67-day long stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: “Preemies: The Essential Guide for Parents of Premature Babies,” written by Dana Wechsler Linden, Emma Trenti Paroli, and Mia Wechsler Doron, M.D. I also found a lot of help and support through various Facebook Support Groups. -Michelle @ Preemie Blessings
I enjoyed What to Expect When Your Expecting and A Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy.
I do love most of the Sears Family Library books. Thanks for the additional ones. I’ll see about passing this along.

When I was pregnant the biggest selling book was “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”. I would love to have read “The Healthy Pregnancy” by Dr. Sears.
