Companies That Support Breast Cancer Research

Companies that support breast cancer research

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s time to break out those pink ribbons and show your support. Of course, supporting the cause requires much more than just wearing a particular color! While donning pink does let the world know that you care and you want to take part in finding a cure for breast cancer, research is the real key to putting an end to the disease.  Just about every company out there “goes pink” in some way during October. Sadly, much of it is a marketing ploy and breast cancer researchers never see a dime from the proceeds. If you really want your dollars to make an impact, support companies that support breast cancer research.

Companies that support breast cancer research

  • JC Penny: JCP has really kicked up its charitable side this year, first offering free haircuts to kids going back to school in August, and now offering free haircuts and styling to breast cancer survivors during October. Not only are the haircuts free, but for every one, JCP will donate $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (up to $50,000). For those who cannot take advantage of this offer, JCP will be donating its Round Up proceeds to the foundation as well. Just round up your purchase to the nearest dollar, and the extra amount goes to support breast cancer research.
  • Estee Lauder:  While many cosmetic companies support breast cancer research, Estee Lauder has gone way above and beyond with their campaigns. From lighting up famous buildings around the world to increase breast cancer awareness to launching a petition drive to increase federal funds towards researching a cure, this company really takes their support seriously.  They’ve initiated numerous large-scale campaigns over the years, and continue to work throughout the entire year to help put an end to breast cancer.
  • Avon: Although Avon started out as a cosmetic company, I don’t really think they can be called that anymore since they’ve moved way beyond mere cosmetics. As far as companies that support breast cancer research go, Avon has really been a major player in raising funds since 1992, when they launched their Avon Breast Cancer Crusade in the UK. The US adopted the crusade a year later. Since then, they’ve raised over $175 million for breast cancer research. They’ve also provided education and linked millions of women to early detection programs.
  • KitchenAid: This year, KitchenAid has vowed to donate a minimum of $450,000 towards breast cancer research. In addition to donating proceeds from the sales of their pink KitchenAid products, they are also hosting a 1,000 Cooks for the Cure and a Pass the Plate program to encourage others to get involved.
  • WWE: Looking for companies that support breast cancer research that also appeal to men? The WWE in general, and superstar John Cena in particular, is a huge supporter of the cause.  John will be wearing special gear during October to help raise awareness, and at least 30% of the profit from his special-edition merchandise will go towards the cause.

Why Support Companies that Support Breast Cancer Research?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of companies that support breast cancer research. Some do it on a grand scale, like the above companies. Others do what they can in smaller ways. Obviously, companies need to make a profit to survive, so not every penny from your purchase is going towards breast cancer research. So why not just make a donation directly to the foundations that actually work on the cures? Well, you should be doing that too, if you can. Unfortunately, in tough economic times, not everyone has the extra funds to do that. If you need new clothes, though, and you’re going to be buying them anyway, it makes sense to buy them from someplace that gives back in some way. Supporting these initiatives tells companies that it is worth their time and budget to continue with their programs.

  1. I had no idea that those companies helped support breast cancer research. I always feel more apt to want to support companies that help support such great causes like this. Thanks for letting me know.

  2. Thanks for this list! I love supporting THEM if they support this cause!

  3. It’s nice to see so many large companies supporting such an important cause.

  4. Breast cancer research is so important and I thank you for your list above!

  5. Hi! I walked in the Avon Walk last year and was so inspired that I decided to walk again this year. My inquiry is how do I find companies that will donate to an individual walker or team (I have a team with my step-daughter – New York or Bust). It is hard to raise $1,800 each from friends and family. I want to find businesses or companies that might donate to an individual walker. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

    • I think the best thing to do would be to contact local companies and stores. Try for face-to-face meetings so you can really share your story and your goal, and they can SEE that you mean it. Emails are okay, but they’re easier to ignore or “miss.” I did a March of Dimes walk with my son years ago, and this really helped me raise funds. Good luck!
