Give Fast Food a Makeover with Ore-Ida® #oreidamom

If your family loves the taste of fast food, but you’re not quite thrilled about all the fat, calories and other junk you find in it, then give it a makeover! It seems these days my son only wants to eat food that comes in a bag handed to us out of a window. Not exactly healthy eating, right? See, my son gets his pickiness from me, although I think he’s even worse than I ever was!

I haven’t eaten red meat in about a quarter of a century, but one thing I always missed: a good bacon cheeseburger with a side of fries! With veggie burgers, turkey bacon and Ore-Ida® fries, I can have just that…without all the fat and calories! Plus my son loves Ore-Ida® fries. I love that I can give them to him without feeling guilty. The key is to bake them in the oven rather than fry them. You’ll save a ton of calories that way!

Give kids the foods they love…with a better for you makeover!

The great thing about this fast-food makeover is that it doesn’t require much advance planning. All you really need are a few basic items, depending on your family’s taste preferences.

Ingredients:

  • Veggie Burgers (I buy the frozen kind, but you can also make your own if you prefer).
  • Hamburger Buns
  • Turkey Bacon
  • Ore-Ida® Golden Crinkles® Fries (they only have 120 calories per serving)
  • Cheese and other toppings, if desired

There really aren’t any directions to this, other than follow the directions on the veggie burgers and Ore-Ida® fries package, then top with your favorite toppings. That’s what makes it so easy. It takes less than 10 minutes of prep and about 25 minutes of cooking time. It’s perfect for those nights when you need something fast…but not “out of a drive-thru window” fast.

How did my son like it? See for yourself!

How many calories will you save?

Fast-food version: While the calories in a bacon cheeseburger and fries meal may vary by restaurant, the average fast food version contains 1,250 calories. That’s about half the daily intake for the average healthy adult! It also contains 75 grams of fat!

Makeover version: The Ore-Ida® Golden Crinkles® fries have 120 calories per serving and 4 grams of fat. They have 0 cholesterol! The veggie burger, bun and one ounce of turkey bacon have a combined 260 calories and 7 grams of fat. That’s a total of 380 calories and 11 grams of fat. Of course, if you add cheese it goes up a bit, but still nowhere near the amount found in the fast food equivalent!

Calories saved: about 870 without cheese, still close to 800 with a slice of cheese, ketchup and mustard.

Doesn’t that make you feel better? Ore-Ida® is such a tasty and convenient side dish. With so many different varieties, you’re sure to find your family’s favorite fry style!

Ore-Ida® uses only 100% fresh, American grown potatoes for their French Fries and Tater Tots. It’s quality you can feel good about, and the convenience you need in your busy life. Visit http://www.oreida.com for more great recipe ideas and to learn more!
