I love oatmeal in the morning for breakfast. It is one of my favorite healthy recipes for kids and very fast to make so it is a good choice when I’m running behind and need to get the kids out the door to school on time. Of course, the kids want the packets of instant oatmeal that they sell at the store. It is very easy to learn how to make your own instant oatmeal. There is a base recipe that will make a lightly sweetened instant oatmeal. You can choose what types of additions you add to the base recipe depending on what your children enjoy eating.

You can make as many or as few packages of instant oatmeal as you like.  I generally make about a week’s worth and store each day in a small plastic container.  You can choose to store yours in snack sized plastic baggies if you want to.  Using a small plastic re-usable container saves the waste of throwing away the plastic baggie.

Directions

Watch this video for detailed directions:

  •  Place a 1/4 cup of quick cooking oats, granulated sugar to taste, and a pinch of salt in each plastic container or plastic baggie. This is your base recipe.
  • Add to it a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon.
  • Add in a small handful of whatever additions you want.  I like cinnamon and raisin and coconut and fig the best.  The kids enjoy cinnamon and pecans.

Just experiment with your extra ingredients until you have an instant oatmeal that resembles the ones your kids enjoy in the store.  You can purchase containers of dried apple slices and chop them into small pieces to make an apple cinnamon instant oatmeal as well.  I try very hard to avoid adding candy and unhealthy foods to breakfast cereals but for a treat, you could add chocolate chips and walnuts.  If you want to make your instant oatmeal healthier but still let your child think they are having a treat, try substituting carob chips instead of the chocolate chips.  They’ll never know the difference!

To store the plastic containers or baggies, just put them in a plastic tub with a lid and store them in the pantry. It will be easy to grab one and just add hot water on your next busy morning.

  1. You know, I never thought to do this… it would make breaky so much easier to set the containers up and have them eat something healthy that I knew what was in it.

    Thanks!
