Encouraging children to eat healthy food can be a challenge.  The grocery stores are full of cereals with marshmallows, granola bars with candy, and foods that have had food dye added to them. By making your own snacks at home, you have more control over the ingredients that go into your children’s food for both snacks and meals. This will help you ensure that they are getting the vitamins and nutrients that they  need to stay healthy and strong.

One of the snacks that I see at the grocery store that I can easily make at home is apple sauce.  Many of the apple sauce snacks at the grocery store have been dyed different colors.  Of course, pink apple sauce looks like it is much more fun than the traditional apple sauce snacks.  Unfortunately, some of the apple sauce that is pink has been made pink by added artificial colors.  You can easily add a pink color to your own home made apple sauce by adding raspberries or strawberries to the apples when you make it.  If you want your homemade apple sauce to be purple tinted, you can add blueberries or black raspberries instead.

Apple sauce makes a wonderful healthy breakfast for kids along with toast or cereal.  It can also be packed into your child’s lunch box for them to take to school.  If your child is at home, they can enjoy apple sauce for an afternoon snack.  Let the entire family enjoy it as a side dish with chicken or a roast. It is a very versatile food! This is one of my favorite fun breakfast recipes for kids.

You can increase or decrease this recipe to make as much or as little strawberry apple sauce as you’d like.  It can be frozen to use at some time in the future.  Just put the strawberry apple sauce into a plastic container with a tight fitting lid.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 pounds of apples.  I prefer to use Macintosh apples.
  • 8 ounces of fresh strawberries
  • 2 cups of water

I do not use added sweetener in my strawberry apple sauce.  Too much sugar isn’t good for children and strawberries and apples are sweet enough that it is not really needed. If your child insists that the apple sauce is not sweet enough, you can add a bit of agave nectar or honey to sweeten it up.

Directions

  • Peel the apples and cut them into chunks.
  • Remove the hulls from the strawberries and slice.
  • Place the apples, strawberries and water into a pot with a lid.
  • Simmer on low heat until the strawberries and apples are soft. You may mash them slightly.
  • Cool and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
