So your daughter comes up to you and says “mom, I want to have a mermaid party.” If you’re anything like me, you immediately think “a what party?” I mean, what happened to the days of easy-peasy Superhero parties? Sure, they weren’t the most original events, but hey, at least they didn’t require a whole lot of thought! Now it’s all unicorns and mermaids, glitter and glow parties.  Don’t get me wrong, I love original themes, but let’s be honest, they definitely require a bit more planning on our parts!

Fortunately for me (and for you), I happen to be pretty good at planning parties! Not “I’m going to make a living as an event coordinator” good, but I do love brainstorming party ideas! The great thing about a mermaid party: it’s perfect for kids of all ages, all the way up to teens and maybe even adults who are kids at heart. Let’s check out everything you need to make your party a smashing success, including one incredibly tasty mermaid cupcake recipe (with a handy-dandy printable recipe card)!

Decorations pretty much make or break a party theme, but that doesn’t mean you have to go crazy or spend a fortune. For mermaid party decorations, think about your child’s age. If you’re throwing a party for a very young child, you might want to go with a brighter, more cartoony style. Think Disney’s The Little Mermaid. For older kids, teens, and adults look to the ocean for inspiration. Subtle beachy colors mixed with shimmering pearls and a few bright splashes of coral can really bring together the theme. Check out a few of my favorite mermaid decor ideas!

Balloons

Use different shades of blue balloons to create an ocean feel for your mermaid party. Create one accent wall or put them everywhere for an under the sea feeling! I am crazy in love with the jellyfish look in the picture above!  You can also place balloons in nets for a fun look. Use pearl balloons to create a mermaid feel. Once the balloons are inflated, place them inside of a net and drape the net on the wall. Add starfish or fish cutouts to complete the look.

Paper lanterns and ribbons for beautiful hanging decor

Paper lanterns in pastel colors with matching ribbons make for a simple but super pretty decoration to hang from the ceiling! The finished product will look like jellyfish, which you, of course, find in the ocean!

Personalized Water Labels

How darling is this idea? Just fill a glass vase (get a bunch at the dollar store) and fill it with sand and shells. You can add the other decorative elements or just leave them as is.

Party Games & Entertainment

No birthday party is complete without games! Check out a few fun mermaid party game ideas!

Pin the tail on the mermaid

A perfect mermaid game to play at your party is “pin the tail on the mermaid.” You can easily find and print out a mermaid graphic to use, just search Google Images and choose your favorite. Make extras so you can cut out the tail. Amazon also has a Little Mermaid version that you can buy if you want to go the easier route.

Other theme-perfect mermaid party games include:

  • a mermaid race (like a sack race, but with mermaid tails!)
  • ocean-themed scavenger hunt
  • sand castle building contest (if you’re not having the party at a beach, you can bring in play sand)
  • musical islands (think musical chairs, except with large rocks or paper “islands” instead of actual chairs)

  • place the grass into the center of the frosting
  • Place the fork on the right side of the grass
  • place some shells randomly onto the cupcakes
