Easy Vegetarian Spicy Indian Bean Burgers

Are you looking for a delicious Indian Vegetarian Burger recipe for those meat free days? Try this spicy bean burger recipe and even your meat lover fans will ask for more. While I am a hard core meat lover, I cannot have red meat everyday or my cholesterol level will be through the roof and my bank account in the red. So I am trying to come up with interesting summer meat-free recipes. It is hard when you use the BBQ 5 days a week!

When I stumbled on this Indian Vegetarian Burger recipe in Anjali Pathak amazing Cookbook (Secrets From My Indian Family Kitchen), I was curious to try it. The main ingredient was a can of mixed beans. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical. But as my mom says: don’t judge until you taste the final outcome. And she is right (as always). The recipe came out so good. I had 3 patties on the row and my husband too. Let’s see how you can make this easy spicy Indian vegetarian burger recipe.

Super Delicious Indian Vegetarian Burger recipe

spicy-indian-vegetarian-burger-recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 TBSP of vegetable oil
  • 3 spring onions, finely sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 14 oz can mixed beans, drained and roughly mashed
  • The original recipe called for Paprika, chili and cumin. Those are the main ingredients of Patak’s Canada Madras Curry Paste. I used 2 tsp of the paste.
  • 2 tbsp Chopped coriander
  • 2 tbsp chopped chives
  • Salt and pepper for taste.
  • Burger bans
  • Optional: Spinach leaves

Make it

  • Heat  oil in a frying pan. Add onions and let them cook until tender
  • Add Madras paste and stir. Add 1 TBSP of water to avoid burning
  • When water has evaporated, pour the mixture into the mashed beans bowl and mix well. Add coriander, chives, salt and pepper.
  • Form the the bean mixture into burger shapes. It yielded 6 medium vegetarian burger patties.
  • Lay on a platter and cover and let it firm 30 minutes in the fridge
  • When ready, gently heat oil and cook the vegetarian burger patties in the pan for few minutes.
  • I served it on a burger bun with a spinach leave.

  • I also served it as is and enjoyed it without the bun.

Doesn’t it look delicious? This Indian vegetarian burger is so good and I am sure it will become a staple in my home. Although the title suggests a spicy burger, it is not that hot or spicy (or maybe I am biased because I eat lot of spicy food). I find this vegetarian burger very tasty and flavorful.

Next time, I will double the batch and freeze the burger patties in individual portions. They will be ready to use for those meat free days or for any vegetarian guest I may have.

Pataks gives me a chance to really experiment with vegetarian recipes. As you may know, many Indian foods are vegetarian. Last month, I tried this delicious Gluten Free Spicy Chickpeas Salad Recipe that came out amazing. I’m also looking forward to the return of pumpkin season because I really miss the taste of the Curried Roasted Pumpkin I made for Diwali! Even something as simple as a carrot paste taste better when you spice it up with Pataks!

When it comes to burgers we usually prefer the “real deal” but we did have a black bean burger before that we liked. We would have to cut down the spice on these! We do like to do meatless occasionally!
