Summer is almost here! With it comes the glorious hot weather, trips to the beach, water sports, kids spending endless hours in the great outdoors for summer vacation, and summer safety concerns. Here are our top must-haves in summer safety gear.
Must-Have Summer Safety Gear
You want to protect your child from sunburns and cancer risk, but you don’t want to expose them to chemicals such as parabens. Give them a fragrance free, chemical free sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium oxide which will protect against the entire spectrum of the sun’s rays, such as Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen.
The bright summer sun can damage your family’s eyes. Make sure you choose a pair which protects from both the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays, not just one or the other. Save the frustration of chronically broken children’s sunglasses, by picking them up a rubber pair! RIVBOS Foldable Flexible Ladybug Polarized Sunglasses are made of rubber, so they’re foldable. They look as cute as a button, especially when they’re folded for storage. They’re made for ages 2-10 and come in a variety of designs and colours, including Owl and Cat. They also come in a flip-up style – no more lost sunglasses – they can keep the glasses on as they go in and out.
It’s so important to keep hydrated during the summer months to prevent heat stroke. It can be hard for you and your kids to lug water bottles around. Collapsible water bottles with a carabiner clip are wonderfully portable! We bought some for our trip to Disney World and carried them clipped to our lanyards. Whenever we ran out of water, we refilled them at a fountain or sink. You can also clip them to your belt loop, bag, or purse. This gift set of three is terrific, the bright colours would appeal to the kids.
Sun hats are just as important for summer safety as keeping hydrated to prevent heat stroke during the summer. Choose really cute hats that your kids will want to wear. Try these adorable, straw hats with Cat Ears. They come in all sorts of colours, and they’re available for adults, too!
Mosquitoes can be a big problem in the summer. For some children, mosquito bites swell up into large welts, and others end up scratching until the bites are bleeding or infected. If you want to protect them from the little blood suckers, but don’t want to use something with toxic chemicals, there are DEET free repellents. Give this Coleman Skin Smart DEET-Free Pump Spray a try – it’s also aerosol free and you can’t beat the price!
Your child spends a lot of time riding a bike over the summer. They need a helmet to keep them safe. Why not choose one that will mean no more, “Aww Mom, do I HAVE to wear my helmet?” Your child will LOVE one of these Raskullz helmets. Choose from such designs as Cutie Cat, Shark Attax, Jolly Roger Mohawk, Rainbow Unicorn, and more! They come in all kid sizes. The hardest part for your child will be choosing the one they love best.

a wide brimmed hat is a good way to protect against the sun
Awesome list! Recently made my own insect repellent, I hope it works!
I agree with everything on your list. I would add in a first aid kit :).
I didn’t know Coleman came out with the insect repellent
Great tips! I will be on the lookout for the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, which I have never seen or heard of before. I am always looking for sunscreen for sensitive skin and this one is beyond resonably priced!
sunscreen is a must
Great list! I’d add bug repellent more generally, and a product that reduces itchiness after being bit.
Yes, we always have a stick of anti-itch ointment in the car and in the house :) Where we live it’s mostly black flies that bother us, but most places it’s mosquitoes.
