Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom was published in 2012 and written by Julia Donaldson, with illustrations by Axel Scheffler. It is the story of a sweet witch and her friendly cat who invite some of their animal friends to travel on her broomstick. The School Library Journal praised the book by saying, “The story is in rhyme, bouncing merrily along, full of fun. The illustrations are witty and wonderful. The result is a surefire read-aloud hit.”
By the Light of the Halloween Moon
By the Light of the Halloween Moon was published in 2012 and written by Caroline Stutson, with illustrations by Kevin Hawkes. It is the tale of a young girl, whose sitting on a bridge, dangling her feet and attracting a host of Halloween characters such as ghosts, bats, witches and black cats. The Saffron Tree, said about the book, “The feet-tapping rhythm and lively unfolding of events, coupled with delightful illustrations, makes this book a real treat, possibly even an emerging a Halloween classic for us, much like The Night Before Christmas has become the Christmas Eve tradition.”
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything was published in 2002 and written by Linda Williams, with illustrations by Megan Lloyd. It is the story of a sweet old lady who didn’t have a fear in the world. That is until one night she went for a stroll in the woods and encountered some eerie surprises. Blog Critics said, “Linda Williams has written a picture book about an old lady who walks, not runs, from her fear. But, in the end, she faces it head on.”
Humbug Witch was published in 2004 and written by Lorna Balian. It is the tale of a scary looking witch who was trying hard to get her potions and spells to come out right and she just couldn’t do it and she had no idea why. From Carol’s Notebook, “Humbug Witch by Lorna Balian is a charming Halloween read for young kids. The little witch is perfect. She has her slightly squashed, tall, black, pointed hat, her witchy shoes, long stringy hair and a sturdy broomstick.”
In the Haunted House
In the Haunted House was published in 1994 and written by Eve Bunting, with illustrations by Susan Meddaugh. It is the story of a young girl and her dad walking around a dark and mysterious house. The illustrations throughout the book only show two pairs of feet as they walk through the house, one pair of little feet and one pair of bigger feet. Publishers Weekly said, “All in all, this winning addition to the Halloween bookshelf is sure to prompt as many giggles and shivers as the holiday itself.”

I think this is an awesome list, one that the kids will enjoy too. It will definitely make them more interested in reading if you buy a book that matches the current season.
I love buying story books for my kids when they were little and I remember buying one for each of the different seasons as well. These stories sound interesting and I’m sure a lot of kids will enjoy reading them.
I have never heard of any of these Halloween books before. I will totally have to check them out when I get a child.
We have a Room On A Broom, but the rest are new to me! I am definitely going to be ordering one or two that your suggested. My daughter love Halloween!
