Turn Lights Off: When you leave your house or go to bed at night, make sure to unplug and turn your tree lights off. While newer lights are less likely to ignite things, there is still a chance that a dry tree and hot light against a branch can create a fire.
Check For Frayed Cords: Before putting last years lights on the tree, make sure to check the cords well for any fraying or damage. Storing lights can often put them out there for potential of rodents chewing through them. You may also want to check for minor damage to cords that potentially could have happened in packing them away. A cut, tear or fray in a cord can lead to sparks and fire.
Check Old Ornaments & Decorations For Lead Paint: Just because your grandma passed down her vintage Christmas ornaments to you doesn’t mean they are safe to use. If you have small children in your home who might be prone to putting those decorations in their mouths, make sure to check them for lead paint. While not all had this, some did and it is better to be safe than sorry.
Keep Glass Ornaments Off The Tree When Kids & Pets Are Around: There are many options instead of using glass ornaments. While they may be your preference, small animals and kids who could bump into the tree could create a big mess and potential injury. Go with as much plastic as possible to ward off potential injuries if something alls or gets knocked over.
Keep Your Tree Watered: Keep your live tree well watered throughout the holiday season. A dry tree is a potential fire hazard. If you fear having a real tree in your home, simply invest in a high quality real looking fake tree for your Christmas decorations.
