Stay at home moms going back to school face their own unique challenges! Many of us moms have chosen to stay at home with our kids as they grow, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting to have a career and education.  We have come up with some Tips For Stay At Home Moms Going Back To School that will help in this trend that is on the upswing with more and more women using their time at home to learn and grow for future work.

Whether your goal is to complete your degree to use once your kids are in school, or simply to finish something you started to set a good example for your children we can help you make that happen.  Juggling a home, school and kids can be tough but these tips are sure to help you regain focus while furthering your education with kids underfoot.

TIPS FOR STAY AT HOME MOMS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

CHOOSE YOUR SCHOOL WISELY Depending on the age of your children an online degree program may be much better for you at this time than going to an actual college campus regularly.  With colleges like University of Phoenix gaining more popularity and acceptance it is truly very easy to locate a degree program you can complete easily in the comfort of your own home.  Check with your local state universities as well for their online programs that would give you the flexibility you need.

STICK TO A REGULAR SCHEDULE.  As a SAHM you likely already have a great routine in place to keep your kids on schedule, your house clean and meals on the table.  With a little adjusting here and there you can adapt your existing schedule to make education a daily part of the routine.  Keeping on task and setting yourself goals each day will help you to not get lazy and forgetful when school begins.

FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER/HELPER Do you have another local SAHM friend who is going back to school?  Hold each other accountable for daily tasks around the house as well as school assignments.  Even if you aren’t taking the same courses, you can easily offer support as needed during the process.

FIND A SITTER YOU TRUST While being a SAHM is all about spending that time with your children, you will have times when you truly need a day alone to accomplish a task or to regroup after stressful week.  Locate a good quality sitter you trust for those occasions.  It can be a family member (grandparent, aunt, cousin), a local friend or even a local daycare that accepts drop ins.  Trust me, you will want and need that quiet break at least a few times during your college education.

CREATE A DESIGNATED SCHOOL AREA One of the best ways to stay focused is to work in a focused area.  Keep your school books in your school area.  Study and work at a table or a specific part of your house at all times.  While on occasion it is nice to have a change of scenery, it is important to keep yourself focused and without distractions.  That means working in the living room means no TV on in the background.  Remove distractions and designate a specific area of the house for your school time.

GET YOUR SPOUSE ON BOARD.  If you have a spouse or significant other in the home as well, it is very important that they be on board with you in your education journey.  Open communication with them regarding your school obligations versus home and kid obligations is a must.  Make sure that everyone is available to pitch in when mom has finals or a big paper due.  A good support system is vital for stay at home moms going back to school!

No matter what your reasons for continuing your education these tips for stay at home moms going back to school are sure to help you focus and stay on track.  Nothing is more rewarding than knowing you set a good example to your children by completing your educations despite what could be considered disadvantages.  Being a mom is the ultimate accomplishment in life, but part of that is being a good example to the children you have in both life, work and education.

  2. Anytime my 7 month old is asleep, I jump right back into school work. It is so difficult when he wakes up and I have to stop my rhythm. Staying open minded and grateful helps me from feeling discouraged. When my husband comes home from work, he takes over with the children. This helps tremendously!

  3. Great tips! Going back to school as a mom would be a real challenge for me. Luckily, I’ve already got my Masters! Maybe a PHD once the kids are older.

  4. I agree with the balance. It really is everything, might be hard to find but once you have it, it will work out great!

  5. That’s a really smart move to make a designated study area. Everyone in the family could learn that you’re not to be disturbed when you’re working there.

  6. My husband went back to school after we had our first child. It was challenging at times, but it was worth it!
