Fun Outdoor Activities for Families in Massachusetts

Take a Stroll Through History!

Massachusetts is one of the most historically rich states in the entire United States. After all, it’s where the Pilgrims first landed when they came over on the Mayflower! Take a guided tour of Boston and see all the stunning architecture and historical sites. Prefer to explore on your own? Many tour guide companies and visitor’s centers offer maps to guide you. I highly suggest taking a tour of Salem. I’ve been there several times and it’s my favorite place to explore. I’ve never used a guided tour, just wandered on my own. The House of Seven Gables is a must-see!

Grab a Llama and take a hike!

Hiking on its own is a great way to explore nature. Taking a llama along for the ride…er, walk…that just makes it so much more fun! Of course, the llama also makes it easier for you, because they do all the major heavy lifting by carrying your gear. But come on, it’s a llama! On a hike! When your child’s teacher asks “what did you do this summer vacation,” I bet no one else will be able to say “my family went hiking with a llama!” Yes, I’m a little too fascinated with this whole concept. Let me just tell you where you can do this exciting activity, then I’ll move on. Head to Pinetum Farm in Grady Massachusetts to take a hike with a llama!

Go Whale Watching!

One of the coolest things to do outdoors in Massachusetts is whale watching. Imagine seeing one of these glorious sea beasts jumping up out of the water up close! There are dozens of whale watching tours throughout Massachusetts. Even if luck isn’t on your side that day and you don’t happen to catch a glimpse of a whale, the boat ride is still a great way to get some fresh air!

Hit the Rail Trail!

If your family loves bike riding, head out to Cape Cod and hit the Rail Trail! The trail was once a railroad right-of-way. It is 22 miles of paved, low-impact road that weaves through nature and towns. Plus, it’s easy access to the beach, so you can take a break along the way to take a dip in the Atlantic! Of course, Cape Cod isn’t the only place you can go for a bike ride, but it is one of the most beautiful!

Do-It-Yourself Adventures

With 450,000 acres of forests, parks and other beautiful outdoor areas, the Massachusetts park system is one of the largest in the United States. Grab a free park passport and start exploring! Go hiking, biking, fishing, camping or just stroll through nature at a leisurely pace. The great thing about state parks is that there is so much to do even without a minute-by-minute itinerary.

What is your favorite activity to do outdoors? I bet Massachusetts has it!
