Looking for the perfect family-friendly getaway in Mexico? Head to Los Cabos! From swimming with the dolphins to lounging on beaches off the beaten path, it's filled with kid-friendly activities! Let's check out a few of them!

We are excited to partner with Luxury Retreats to share our favorite family-friendly things to do in Los Cabos! So, here’s the funny thing. I’m kind of a conundrum. All season long, I’ve been complaining that it just isn’t cold enough to feel like the holiday season. The other day, though, the temperatures dipped below freezing and I found myself dreaming of getting away to a beachy paradise! I even started looking for Mexico houses for rent!  I love renting a vacation house when I’m traveling with my son.  You save SO much money on food because you can cook in your rental, and you don’t have to worry about your kids disturbing the people around and below you when they play.

There are quite a few places in Mexico that I’d love to visit, but Los Cabos is at the top of my list, especially if I’m going to travel with my son. It’s on the Baja California Peninsula, right down at the tip. It’s bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, so if you want to be close to as much water as possible, this is the place to be in Mexico. There are so many family-friendly things to do in Los Cabos. Let’s take a look at some of my favorites!

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Los Cabos Mexico

Keep in mind that Los Cabos encompasses a 1,448 square mile area, so the things to do there will depend on exactly where you stay and how far you are willing to travel. Most of these activities take place in or around the two main tourist towns: Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Luxury Retreats has some amazing rentals in both towns, as well as in The Corridor in between.

1. Outback & Camel Safari

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: hopping on a camel isn’t exactly what you picture when you think of a beach vacation. Don’t write them off, though! They’re the perfect way to explore the desert and Baja outback regions!  The tours are led by local guides who know all the best spots to see the area’s native flowers, trees, and wildlife. Make sure you tell your kids to keep their eyes peeled for the ginormous ancient cacti and darling animals like foxes and chipmunks!

The Camel Safari is over in Migrino area, about an hour away from Cabo San Lucas. FYI, riding a camel is kind of like riding a horse. You may be a little achy afterward! This is where renting a house with a hot tub so you can relax after the kids go to bed comes in handy!

2. Playa Del Amor

Although it translates to “The Lover’s Beach,” Playa Del Amor is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with the whole family. The rock formations are incredible, and the arch is a can’t miss feature of Los Cabos. You’ll need to hop on a boat to get over to the beach. Make sure you keep your camera out to capture the stunning views!

The arch looks most amazing when viewed from the water. Once you get to the beach, spend the day exploring the caves and rock faces. Just make sure you bring everything you need for the day, including snacks, water, sunscreen, and so on. There is only one vendor on the beach and they mostly sell adult beverages.

3. Swimming with the Dolphins

Head to the Puerto Los Cabos marina for a close encounter with one of the world’s smartest mammals! They offer three different levels of excitement for the whole family. For those on a tight budget or with very young kids, a Dolphin Encounter lets you interact with them without actually swimming out into the deeper waters. If you really want to go for the whole experience, they have two different dolphin swimming packages to choose from.

4. Whale Shark Encounter

If you have older kids, this is definitely one of the coolest things to do in Los Cabos! They’ll need to be old enough to learn how to use a snorkel to swim next to the world’s biggest fish! As you make your way there, you’ll have a chance to explore the darling town of La Paz and revel in Baja California’s gorgeous landscapes. Then you’ll head to the Sea of Cortes, also called the Aquarium of the World, where your family will take in all the amazing flora and fauna of the marine. Finally, you’ll put on your snorkels and head into the Pacific Ocean to swim with these fascinating creatures. Don’t worry, even though they can grow up to 45-feet long, they’re harmless.

5. City Tours

There are a ton of different city tour companies in Los Cabos. While I usually prefer to explore new places on my own, I also try to mix in as much educational fun as possible for my son. I like to book a tour early during our vacation so that we can get the inside scoop and find out which places we want to spend a bit more time exploring. Since so much of what Los Cabos has to offer is on the beach or in the water, you’ll want to pick a tour that includes a boat ride. Plus, it’s more entertaining for kids than sitting in a stuffy tour bus. Trust me, been there, done that. My son fell asleep on the bus and missed the whole tour!

6. Private Harbor Cruise

It sounds expensive, I know, but actually the cost for a private harbor cruise is crazy reasonable! In fact, a lot of the things to do in Los Cabos are totally budget-friendly. While these cruises often cater to couples or adult groups, there’s no reason you can’t take one with your family.

You’ll have a whole mini boat to yourselves. Lounge in style as you travel to a semi-private beach, then spend some time snorkeling or swimming! Most of the cruises last about 3-4 hours total, including the time spent anchored.

7. Ziplining

If your family is looking for something a little more thrilling, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to zipline in Los Cabos! I’ll be honest, as much as I love the idea of flying across a canyon on a zipline, you’ll never see me actually doing it. I’m scared of heights! My husband and son, on the other hand, would love it! Although there are a bunch of different tourist companies that offer the service, I like Monster Ziplines the best because they seem super kid-friendly. You can zip across the canyon alone, tandem style, or attached to your whole family.

8. Hideaway Villages Tour

As much as I adore seeing the huge tourist attractions in new places, I really love getting off the beaten path and seeing what life is really like in an area. Visit the smaller villages in Los Cabos, like Miraflores and Santiago.

Feria en Santiago

Your family will get to visit an old saddlery and learn about the art of crafting horse saddles. Get a peek at the unique wooden furniture made using fallen trees, then check out the zoo and an authentic hacienda.

9. Wild Wet Fun Aquatic Park

It may be strange to think about going to a water park when you’re surrounded by beaches, but trust me, the kids will love it! With tons of fun water slides, a pirate ship replica, and lots of beautiful pools, it has everything you need for a fun day. You can’t bring food or beverages into the park, but they do have plenty of vendors. The park is a bit off the beaten path, in between San José del Cabo and Santiago. Make a day of it by spending a little time exploring the less-traveled areas of Los Cabos along the way!

10. Cuadra San Francisco Equestrian Center

Although you can find plenty of larger horseback riding tours throughout the region, this one is perfect if you want to spend the afternoon exploring pretty much every horse-related activity. It’s run by master horsemen who will take you out on trail rides, beach rides, and even carriage rides. They’ll even teach you how to play polo if you want! Even younger kids can get in on the action with the pony-sized horses.

Many of these kid-friendly things to do in Los Cabos are offered by multiple tour companies, so you can find the perfect option for your family. Make sure you schedule in a little down time to unwind between activities. As tempting as it is to pack your days full of as much excitement and fun as possible, kids can only take so much before they melt down. I like to set up my itinerary so I follow a really hands-on activity with something more relaxing. For example, do the water park during the day, then schedule a moonlight family cruise for the evening.

I also like to set aside one afternoon for just relaxing in my rental. With Luxury Retreats, you can find an amazing house rental that you’ll never want to leave! Many of them come with private pools, which are just perfect for unwinding after a long day of sight seeing.

I haven’t been to Los Cabo, but I’m heading to Mexico next March. I’d love to swim with dolphins and take long strolls around the city by myself or with locals. I speak Spanish so I’m in for the challenge. :)

  3. This is quite sad to read now that I live somewhere where it’s winter and I can’t enjoy such weather :(. But I so truly wish I could because what you shared looks not only amazing but oh so relaxing – and I’m going through finals so yeah, I even sound desperate haha. Great article!

  4. Oooh I would love to go to Mexico! I never really knew much about it other than as a holiday destination, but it looks great!

  5. I have always wanted to go to Mexico, partly because I find their cultural traditions fascinating but also because I think its beautiful. I love the tranquility of playa del amor and the secretiveness of the ‘hideaway village tour’. I love going off the tourist track x
