Want to go on a family vacation, but don’t want to spend a ton of money? Although family vacations can definitely get pricey, careful planning and the right destination can help lighten the financial burden. Here are five cheap travel destinations that are perfect for a budget-friendly vacation.
Cheapest Places in the US for your Family Vacation
Myrtle Beach
Ready for some fun in the sun? Then you need to plan your family vacation to Myrtle Beach. With the popularity of this destination, you can find decently priced lodgings, allowing you to spend a week in this warm paradise without breaking the bank. There are plenty of activities you and your family can participate in at this vacation spot, or you can take advantage of the great weather and spend some time on the beach for free.
Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is a family-friendly destination that won’t empty your wallet. When you visit this vacation destination, you have the opportunity to walk around with your family, experiencing the sights and sounds of Mackinac Island. You can also spend a little time in the sun with the beaches located around the island. Lodging is available on the island, or you can book a room off the island and take a ferry over for a day of fun.
Yellowstone National Park
If you’d like your family to get in touch with nature this summer, then you need to take a family trip to Yellowstone National Park. You can gain admittance into this well-known national treasure for a reasonable cost, and even save by visiting on one of the fee-free days. When planning your trip, you’ll need to decide whether you’ll check in to a reasonably priced hotel or if you and your family will rough it with camping accommodations. Don’t forget to do some hiking or to visit the Science Learning Center while you’re here!
Grand Canyon
Another great destination for this summer is the Grand Canyon. Your family will ooh and ahh over the majestic view at this national park, and the entrance fee into the park is definitely affordable! You can either buy an individual pass for a week for each person, or save even more money and buy a vehicle permit. If you plan your trip just right, you might even gain free entrance on special dates.
Cape Cod
If you’re ready to get away with your family, you might want to consider taking a trip to Cape Cod this summer. Although Cape Cod has that small town atmosphere that families love, it has some awesome activities not usually found in a small town. You’ll have plenty of chances to escape into the great outdoors with the abundance of beaches and nature areas. You can also take the whole family to a cheap day of fun with the drive-in movie theater and play mini-golf course.
All of these family vacation destinations can be done on a budget. Sure, there are splurges in each destination, but you’ll find that anywhere. The point is, you can find tons of fun activities without breaking your wallet or looking too hard!
What is your favorite family vacation destination in the US? Would you consider it a good bargain or a splurge?
good tips — thanks
I am hoping to go to Mackinac Island this year. Have never been and it looks really nice!
About 2 hours away from Mackinaw!! I always love going up north!
Mackinac Island has been on our list to visit, but I’ve always wondered if there is enough for kids to do there.
We have never been to those places. And I truly like that those places won’t rip our wallet apart. Thanks for sharing.
USA has lots of outdoor places, nice places, we dream of visiting US in the future.
I love that the Cape made your list. I love Cape Cod. I will have to check out the rest.
Great list for a budget friendly family vacation. Mackinac Island & Grand Canyon is something I would love to visit for long time & I am happy they can be done under an affordable budget plan.

I like to go to Mackinac. We rented bikes and spent the day exploring the island it was fun. It was a little pricey though, or at least I thought so. ;)
wow, thanks for sharing this information…. Mackinac Island sounds like a good place to visit.
We live close to Mackinac Island. The Grand Hotel is very pricey. The island is beautiful!
I would love to take my family to Grand Canyon. Road trip!!
I’ve always wanted to go to Yellowstone Park. My boys would love the outdoors!
I’ve always thought of Mackinac as expensive, so this is interesting. It’s one of my fave places to go!
It doesn’t have to be expensive, there are a lot of reasonable hotels on and off the island.
I love exploring the areas around where we live. Day trips are the way to go when you’re looking to save money. We love playing tourist in our own area :-)
I live about 10 minutes off of cape cod and I am not sure I’d say it’s cheap. Vacation rentals are pretty pricey down there unless you go on the off season.
