How to Make a Beautiful Family Cookbook with the Canon PIXMA MG7120

Creating your cookbook with the Canon PIXMA MG7120 is fairly easy, depending on how fancy you want to get. Honestly, you could simply print all your favorite recipes on regular paper, stick them in a binder and call it a day. While that’s certainly practical, we’re going for something a little more heirloom-quality here, right? There are a few ways you can go about that. Here is how I did it.

Collect your recipes.

This is actually the hardest part! Go through all those places that you have your recipes stored and organize them in a way that works best for you. I start with online recipes and gather them in a bookmark folder, then gather all the recipes on my computer into one spot.

With handwritten recipes, you have two options: type them up in Word and print, or scan them as is. I still have handwritten recipes from my grandmother and prefer to scan them as is. To me, it creates an authentic heirloom cookbook and always lets you have a part of your loved ones. I’m so impressed by how quickly the Canon PIXMA MG7120 scans documents!

Print your collection

Once you’ve decided which recipes are going into your book, it’s time to decide how you want to print them. Again, you have a few options. You can print to plain paper for an inexpensive option, invest in some card stock paper for a middle-range option or go all out and use photo paper. Of course, you can do a combination of all of the above.

I choose to do a combination. For recipes without pictures, I just printed them on regular paper. Those that featured gorgeous pictures, though, got the special treatment. I printed the pictures on photo paper to include in the book. Using Canon’s My Image Garden software to create the right photo layout made it easy to ensure that I wouldn’t waste paper by aligning images all wrong (something I’ve done in the past because I have no sense of dimensions!).

Of course I wanted to include my favorite OurFamilyWorld recipes! We have a lot of our pictures stored in Dropbox. With the Canon PIXMA Cloud App , I don’t have to run back and forth to my computer to choose pictures and print them. I can just navigate to “Cloud” on my printer’s touch screen, select “Dropbox,” then grab what I need right from there! I can even grab pictures from Facebook and Twitter to print.

Use collages to showcase images

Use the photo layout features in My Image Garden to create collages for each section, like I did with the dessert section here:

You can also use it to create a pretty cover, or use your favorite photo editing app to make a cover.

Pull it all together

Once you have your collection printed just how you want it, it’s time to pull it all together. I recommend using sturdy card stock for your cover. You can also print out your cover on plain paper, then carefully glue it to a piece of cut cardboard and cover it with contact paper to keep it safe.

When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful family cookbook that you can pass down to your children! My next big project? I’m FINALLY going to take all those papers I’ve been keeping since my son was in kindergarten and scan them all into the computer. Then I’ll scan in some of his artwork, create collages, and print out a keepsake book.

  1. I really need a new printer. Every time I go to print something now my black ink likes to leave marks all over the paper even right after it’s cleaned. It is just an old printer! We need an upgrade and this looks great. I could definitely put together a special cookbook from all the recipes my grandmother has given to me over the years.
