Spring Cleaning Essentials: What Do You REALLY Need?

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Dollar General. All opinions are 100% mine.

spring-cleaning-essentials-really-need Even though it may not feel like it, warmer weather is coming soon. That means it’s time to stock up on your spring cleaning essentials! I know my house definitely needs a good cleaning after being cooped up and closed up all winter long. Especially after this particularly brutal winter! The big question is, though, what do you REALLY need to get your house in tip-top shape for the brighter days ahead? That’s the question I had in my mind when I headed to Dollar General to start stocking up!

Stocking up on Spring Cleaning Essentials without Breaking the Bank

spring-cleaning-essentials-really-need I’ll be honest, I was prepared to walk into Dollar General and start filling up my cart with every cleaning product they had (and wow, do they have a lot!). But I didn’t want to totally bust my budget on cleaning supplies. Where is the fun in that? I’d like to save something for all the fun activities Jake and I can do once we aren’t snowed in all the time! So here’s my first tip:

  • Take stock before you stock up! Look under your kitchen sink, bathroom sink and anywhere else that you stash cleaning supplies. See what you have. Don’t just look at the bottle and say “oh, hey, I DO have furniture polish” though, you actually need to shake those bottles. Otherwise you’ll later discover that you only have enough left to do the knob on your dresser. Make a list of what you have and take it along with the list of what you need. That way if you see something that isn’t on your “need” list, you can cross-reference to see if you left it off because you have it or because you just didn’t think about it.

Now, on to the spring cleaning essentials. What do you really need to get the job done? While it depends on your home, types of appliances and other factors, these are my bare minimums. spring-cleaning-essentials-really-need

  • Paper towels and/or sponges: I try to use reusable towels for as many things as possible but I need paper towels for certain tasks. Dollar General always has them at a great price. I recommend getting something strong, so you can use less. I use a paper towel until it is utterly useless, folding it and refolding it to find the dry, clean side until there are no more. Sponges are also great if you want something that you can reuse. I get both because I think they both have different purposes.
  • Disinfectant wipes: We use these for everything in our house. In fact, you can probably eliminate a good ten products just by using one can of disinfectant wipes! Maybe not that many, but you get the point. I use them to clean the bathroom counters, small spills on the kitchen floors, the outside of the toilet, the tight spots around the toilet and sink…pretty much everything that can handle them. Obviously, some surfaces are not meant for these types of cleaners, so read the labels first.
  • Vinegar, Baking Soda and Lemon Juice: These three items can clean just about anything in your house in the right combination! You can grab them in the food section of Dollar General.
  • Furniture Polish: I use this not because I have fancy furniture that needs polishing (I really don’t) but because it does a good job of grabbing dust. I have allergies. When I get dust on my skin, I break out into a rash. If I inhale it? Forget it, I’m sneezing for hours. So I spray the furniture polish on a rag or directly on the surface to grab the dust as I go. It cuts down on the floating particles a lot. Plus it smells good!

  • Something fun & colorful. Don’t laugh! When you’re grabbing your spring cleaning essentials, look for at least one item that is fun and colorful. When I saw this toilet brush hanging on the wall, I thought “now there is a fun toilet brush!” Does it make me want to clean the toilets? No, of course not! But at least I have something to brighten up the task now! You need to bring in an element of fun to your spring cleaning, whether it’s a funky mop color or a cool toilet brush!

Other spring cleaning essentials really depend on your home. I have a dishwasher, so I grabbed some DG Home Dishwashing Pacs. I love them because you just throw them into the soap dispenser. No mess, plus they cost less than other brands yet work just as well. Whatever your cleaning needs, Dollar General has you covered and then some! My local store has at least three aisles of cleaning supplies, and it’s one of the smaller stores! So start taking inventory, make your list, then head to Dollar General to stock up! Spring is finally coming! What’s on your spring cleaning essentials list? Tell us in the comments!

My go to cleaners are white vinegar, baking soda, dish soap, sponge with a one sided scrubbing surface elbow grease and lots of absorbing rags to clean up with. :-)

  2. Ugh but NO no no no to the wipes in the cannisters! More waste of our precious oil, making the plastic, and how many do NOT recycle? We waste waste waste. ladies, use old towels cut into rags or get some good microfiber clothes now. Those for the windows, especially. NOTHING is better for your windows than good old fashioned bucket, cloths and a squeegee! No waste, you re-use your rags over and over and over. It’s good for your budget and our world too.
