Today we’re sharing our top picks for gardening tools for women. Let me share a confession with you: I love the idea of gardening but I’m a total plant killer. In my head, I have these visions of growing this immense garden with secret nooks, climbing ivy and vibrant colors everywhere you look. Butterflies will come. Birds will sing as they make their home in the trees (that I also grew). Bunnies will snuggle under the stone bench. It is all very Disney-like in my head. Reality typically looks more like this:

So my goal is to find the best gardening tools for women that actually make gardening easier, tools that increase my plants’ chances of survival. See, this year, I’m REALLY putting the effort into a garden. Nothing as fancy as my Disney dream, but I’m trying to grow some herbs like catnip, peppermint and cilantro. The catnip would actually be doing pretty well if my cat would stop “trimming” it every day!

Digital Timer so you don’t forget to water them

Part of my problem with keeping plants alive is remembering that I actually HAVE plants I’m trying to keep alive! See, kids and pets let you know when they need hydration. When my son is thirsty, he asks for a drink. When my dogs’ water bowl is empty, they push it around and clang it loudly to get my attention. Or they stalk me into the bathroom and make sure I see them drinking out of the toilet. Plants don’t tell you that they’re thirsty. They don’t talk or bark or meow. They just sit there quietly dying of thirst.

With the Hydrofarm 7-Day Digital Program Timer, you can actually hook your watering system up to it and it will automatically water your plants on your set schedule. No more dehydrated dahlias!

Pruning and trimming tools that don’t kill your hands

I have carpal tunnel in both hands, the curse of a lifetime of writing. It’s hard for me to use certain tools for long periods because my hands cramp up. It gets so bad I want to cry. Gardening should not involving crying in pain, right?  We talked about the amazing Fiskar PowerGear tools before. They were awarded the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation, meaning they’re easy on achy hands. They have an amazingly complete line of gardening tools for women, but I think my first choice for a new gardener would be the Fiskars Softouch Micro-Tip Pruning Snip because I’m pretty sure pruning is an important part of keeping your plants healthy.

Books on how to garden and not kill your plants

I am a book learner. If I want to know how to do something, I have to read about it, then try it. I don’t have a ton of time to delve into encyclopedias filled with gardening tips though. I like quick and easy. One of my favorites is Growing Tomatoes In Containers – A Simple Guide For A Bountiful Harvest (Container Gardening). Why is my favorite? My mom wrote it, under a pseudonym. I don’t know if I’m supposed to tell you that, so don’t tell her you heard it from me! See, my mom CAN garden. In fact, I would say one of the best gardening tools for women is another woman who know how to garden! If you want a broader book, there are plenty of easy gardening books on Amazon to get you started with all types of gardens.

Seed starters like Scott’s Gro-ables

We talked about Scott’s Gro-ables recently, when I shared how they’re easy enough for even someone like me to use. You can buy a fantastic Miracle-Gro Gro-ables Salad and Herb Garden Kit with 18 pods to get you started for under $15. I’m not going to lie, I killed mine already. I forgot to water them. Refer back to the first tool to prevent this from happening to you. They were doing fabulous until I had surgery and forgot that the world existed outside my couch (and my totally cheesy teen show Netflix binge fest). Getting started with them was cake, though. While they’re not technically gardening tools for women, they do make gardening easier for novices.

Pretty pots and accessories

If you want to become a great gardener, your garden needs to be a place that you love. Whether it’s a beautiful planter on your deck or a whimsical gazing ball that inspires meditation, gardening tools for women go beyond just the tools that help you dig and plant. We are typically visual creatures. We love to surround ourselves in beauty. Make your garden a peaceful, relaxing getaway and you’ll find yourself looking forward to tasks like keeping your plants alive.

  1. WOW! I am a horrible gardener, but have always wanted a garden :(. I never thought of a timer to water, I need that! Maybe then I could have the beautiful garden I have always wanted.

  2. You sound so much like me! I have high aspirations for a wonderfully landscaped home and garden, but unless it screams and cries and throws a fit on the floor, I tend to kill it. I got an indoor plant for my desk a few weeks ago and my husband keeps telling me I’m not watering it enough. I thought a few squirts with a water bottle was sufficient each day, but Oh no, not enough! What do I know! Apparently not enough!

  3. I had never heard of the digital timer to remind me to water them! That is cool! I just planted some tomatoes in containers this weekend too! Now I need that book!
