Star with a small herb garden.  If you are just getting started, an herb garden is an excellent choice.  A small window container, or a few small pots around your windowsill with your favorite herbs is a great way to start.  Not only will you see how well you do with remembering to water and care for them, but you can test the waters regarding proper sunlight, water and even how indoor pets will treat them.

Recycle containers you already have on hand.  Container gardens start in some of the most unexpected ways. Use clean old milk cartons, laundry detergent bottles cut open, paint cans, old shoes and even old tires to create a container for your vegetable garden.  Start with what you have on hand at home first before making the investment for other more specific containers or hanging planter systems.

Read about climate and sunlight needs before planting.  While you may want to harvest a record breaking crop of beefsteak tomatoes, your climate or local conditions may not be best for them.  Read about what climate, temperatures and amount of sunlight are needed for your vegetables to thrive.  Container gardening makes it much easier to move a plant to a new location when needing ore sunlight or even rainwater.

Think outside the box for locations.  Hang small containers on exterior walls, fences or in tight spots.  Use tall slender areas for things like tomatoes or beans that grow tall and can be twisted around lattice or steaks to help growth.

Take care when watering.  If putting container gardens indoors, it is especially important to make sure you have a container that allows for water to leak out as needed, but also has a proper catch tray underneath.  Make sure to set up plastic or other materials underneath your containers to catch drips and protect your floors from spills.

These container gardening tips for new gardeners are perfect for starting out with a great herb and vegetable garden this year.  Invest in great quality seeds, some soil with fertilizer and create a wonderful garden that will not only give you a fun activity to do with your family, but a new source of food for your grocery budget.

Great tips for people new to gardening. I do miss my garden, where I had flowers, fruit and veg. We moved 2 1/2 yrs ago to a newly built house and the garden still hasn’t been sorted by the builder. I don’t think I can grow much though as it’s a north facing garden and gets very little sunshine. :-(
