We all want to plan amazing adventures for our kids, but sometimes life throws wrenches into those plans. While backyard camping may not be the life-altering outdoor experience you had in mind for the summer, it can still be incredibly fun for kids! Not to mention, super convenient for you! Think about the easy access you’ll have to your fridge for delicious treats like TruMoo!

I’ve planned at least ten camping trips for my son over the last few years. Every time, something came up.  Someone got sick, the weather didn’t cooperate, or the car needed repairs. It just didn’t happen. Now, with non-stop rain over the last week, most of the areas that we’d camp at are a flooded mess.

Jacob REALLY wants to “try surviving the night outside.” His exact words. A week ago, he packed up the oddest assortment of stuff and set up on the driveway. It was the coldest night of spring! I made him come back in and promised him we would try backyard camping when the weather got nicer. He was a little skeptical, but I promised him it would be fun.

How to make backyard camping a real adventure

Backyard camping is perfect because it combines the adventure of real camping with the convenience of home. You want to give kids the experience of being out in the wild but at the same time, if they decide they’re homesick, they can just walk inside. It’s perfect for first timers. It’s also a great way to get kids ready for a real camping trip.  Make it feel like real camping by following these tips:

Turn off the Wi-Fi: First things first, turn off the Wi-Fi! Why? Because if your kids are like my son, they’ll sneak a gadget out there with them. Since they’re close to the house, they can pick up the Wi-Fi signal. In the real wilderness, there is no internet. If you have to leave it on for work purposes, change the password and don’t give it to them. Instead, give them flashlights and books! Encourage them to read by moonlight and flashlight!

Limit Trips Back Inside: I say let them in to use the bathroom, mostly because I would NEVER camp at a place that didn’t have indoor plumbing of some sort! Other than that, though, tell the kids that the house is off limits unless they have an emergency or decide the camping experience is over. You, on the other hand, can continue to go in and out if you want. The benefit of backyard camping: you can pretend you fridge is a giant cooler! Of course, you can be stricter, pack your essential like a real trip and call the house off limits to yourself too!

Serve Real Camping Snacks: Make sure you have the supplies for all the best camping snacks! Grab your marshmallows for roasting, chocolate and graham crackers for s’mores and your favorite trail mix. Our favorite involves mixing together a bunch of cereal, pretzels and whatever else happens to be in the cabinet.

Make Strawberry Camping Milk Shakes!- This does require a cooler, so it’s something you’ll need to make within the first few hours. I saw a friend make it once and I was just fascinated by it. Basically, you take a small sealable bag and put about two cups of TruMoo Strawberry Milk inside. Then take a gallon-size bag and fill it halfway with ice. Place the sealed TruMoo milk bag in the center of the ice bag.  Add ¼ teaspoon of salt to the ice bag and seal it. Then shake it like crazy!

You’ll need to shake it for about 7-10 minutes, so pass it around. To make it easier, divide the time up among your family. While the shaker is shaking, have them sing a silly song or tell as many facts about themselves as they can in the time it takes to finish their turn. Trust me, this makes the process much more fun. When the milk turns to a milkshake consistency, it’s time to enjoy it!

“Hike” in your own back yard: If you have a huge back yard, turn it into a hiking adventure. Explore fallen trees, look for signs of wildlife, and see everything in a whole new way. If you don’t have this option- or if you really want to get away- take a day trip to a local trail. Earlier this spring, we headed to the Delaware Water Gap to check out a trail that we’ve never explored. We were only there for an hour, and as you can see, the foliage was still pretty sparse. Still, the kids had a great time!

Savor the memories! Camping is about making memories, and backyard camping is no different! Whether you tell ghost stories around a fire pit, roast marshmallows until they have crispy black coatings or just throw down some blankets and read under the stars, you’ll be making memories that last a lifetime.

I couldn’t even begin to count how many memories include TruMoo. It’s become such a major part of my son’s childhood. While chocolate is always his favorite, he gave strawberry a try for the first time recently and discovered that he liked it! This is a major thing, my son RARELY like anything new.

Now, we can share more of those yummy Strawberry TruMoo shakes this summer! I love them because I don’t have to add anything extra to make them. Most shake recipes call for adding extra sugar, no need since TruMoo tastes perfect the way it is! With just 130 calories per serving, it’s a perfect treat for me too. Plus it has no preservatives, artificial flavors or any other junk that you don’t want your kids drinking.

Camping in the back yard is always a fun time. The kids used to love setting up a tent and pretending to be out in a forest.

  2. Hehehe I use to love backyard camping when I was a kiddo! My brother and I did it all the time. I should do it with my daughter. She would probably have a blast!

  3. I need to get a new tent. My kids would have a blast camping in the backyard. I remember doing that when I was growing up. It was always so much fun even though I would rather camp on Colorado.

And we’ve just aired out our tent for the season…..definitely gonna be doing some backyard camping with my little girl….she’s never experienced it but this is her year!

  5. Both my son and I love Tromoo especially the chocolate. Yum! We haven’t tried backyard camping yet. That sounds like a great idea though. Hopefully we get to try it soon.

My kids love Trumoo milk. I didn’t realize they offered Strawberry though. Going to have to get some of this.

  7. Backyard camping is always a fun activity to do. It’s something that my brother and I always did when we were kids & we’d be too lazy to clean up and return all the stuff back home.

I’d really love to try TruMoo. I’ve read about it but unfortunately we don’t have it here ( yet ).

  8. My kids love camping out in the backyard. During the summertime they sleep outdoors for 2-3 weeks straight. These are memories that they will treasure for years to come.

  9. Backyard camping is one of our favorite family activities. I love that we can go right into the house to eat breakfast in the morning, and Tru Moo is always a part of my kids breakfasts.

  10. This would be so much fun. We only have a tiny backyard. When I was growing up, my sisters and I would “camp” on our porch at times though. I never saw the strawberry Trumoo. I’ll have to look for some.

  11. My kids are dying to camp in the backyard this summer. It’s a great way to ease them into real camping without leaving the house! And I didn’t know TruMoo made a strawberry milk!!

Camping in the backyard sounds like so much fun. I think my kids would absolutely love to do that with my husband one of these nights during the summer :-)
