5 Tips to Zap Stay at Home Mom Burnout Before It Starts

Stay at Home Mom burnout is a very real struggle! Check out five tips to stop it before it saps all your energy and joy from parenting!

Stay at home mom burnout is a very real struggle! I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to stay home full time with my four-year-old, but it can be hard.  In fact,  I can tell you without a doubt that it is the absolute hardest and best thing I’ve ever done in my life.  I’ve had some pretty rough jobs over the years, and nothing compares to being home with your child or children, day in and day out in the slightest.  Having a Mom Burnout is a real phenomenon, and probably affects so many more of us than we know – myself included.

Thankfully, we live in an age where we can connect with other moms from all over the world.  And I for one am relieved that more of us are talking about just how hard staying home with our kids really is.  If you find yourself at the beginning stages of a SAHM Burnout, or feeling as though you’re stuck in a major rut being home every day, here are a few tips and tricks to help you get on the right track again.

5 Tips to Prevent Stay at Home Mom Burnout

1- You Time

Sounds impossible, right?  If you find some, you will be happier: of this I am 100% certain.  Can you have a cup of hot coffee while you plop your kids in front of Sesame Street for ten minutes?  Can you call a friend and wrangle the kids out the door for a walk?  Whatever it is that focuses on you and your needs should become more of a priority.  I know finding the time is hard (if not almost impossible) and not without challenges, but even ten minutes at a time can feel amazing.

2- Keep It Real

Be realistic when it comes to what you need to do on a daily basis.  Don’t overload your days with an arm-long list that makes you feel like a failure if you can’t do it all.  If you have a teething baby and an inquisitive preschooler, it’s probably not the time to be trying out extravagant recipes; or trying to commit to anything that takes up large chunks of time for that matter.  I try to have one thing every day that I need to do (chores; errands; etc.), and once I’ve done it I feel great.  And if I have the time to do two things, I pretty much feel like Supermom!

3- Friends

Having friends to chat to about the ups and downs of being a SAHM can really help normalize the craziness.  On the flip side, I so look forward to chatting with my best friend, because I know that we’re likely going to talk about something other than motherhood and kids.  Either way, friends can be a lifeline when you need one.

4- Step Back

You can’t be everything for everyone all the time – nor should you.  Our kids can definitely benefit from playing by themselves and problem solving on the own from time to time.  I was exhausting myself daily trying to keep up with the household and juggle being my son’s playmate all day long.  Then I realized that it’s OK for me to let him play on his own – in fact, it’s good for him.  When he asks me what he should play next, sometimes I go ahead and let him figure it out on his own.

5- Be Healthy

There a lot of things that you can incorporate into your daily routine easily that are good for you and your kids, and will also help make you feel more energized – and a mom who’s more energized is often happier too.  Some examples of what you can do: eat less processed foods; get outside; drink more water; exercise daily, even it’s just a short walk around the block; visit your GP,  dentist, and therapist regularly; etc.  There are a lot of small things you can do to improve your overall well-being.

Keeping Stay At Home Mom Burnout at bay can be a challenge – and some days will definitely be easier than others.  But by taking care of yourself as well as your kids, you can help alleviate some of your feelings of SAHM burnout.

I was on the brink of a SAHM burn out last week. I was up to my neck in work, plus the housework and a sick husband. Thankfully, I survived.
