How do you handle life with one sick child and one healthy one all on your own?  Whether you are a SAHM or a single mom, things get tough.  This is the situation one of our mom readers came to us with.  She is a SAHM and her husband works on the road.  With no one close to her to help her out, she is left to do it all by herself, sick kids and all.  So how do you handle it without feeling like you are being a bad mom to either of your kids?

I have been in that same boat.  When you are sick, all you want to do is just lay in bed and not do anything.  Your kids feel the same way.  However, life still goes on, food still needs to be purchased, other kids still need to get to places, and, unfortunately, you have to lug your poor sick kid with you.

As moms, we want what is best for our children.  That being said, when one of your kids is healthy and has places to be, like dance class, you don’t want her to miss out because her little brother is sick.  But you don’t want to bring your sick baby out either.  So what is a mom to do with little help from anyone?  Start asking.

People love to help (no, really they do!)  But they can’t help if they don’t know you need it.  Just ask.  If your child goes to daycare or preschool, start making friends with her friends moms.  There are sure to be times where she could use your help in return.

The flip side is understanding that you are not Super Mom (none of us are, contrary to what you might see on social media!)  If one of your kids is sick, and the other needs to get to dance class, maybe she just has to stay home this time.  It will not be the end of the world.  Weigh it out, dance class or making a sick child comfortable?  It is ok not to be able to ‘do it all’ I promise.  If you can’t make it to the grocery store to stock up, it is perfectly fine to have cereal for dinner.  Everyone will survive.

When your kids are sick, it is not fun for anyone.  Sometimes the world has to stop, and you just have to sit on the couch and cuddle your small human back to health, and that is ok.  These are the things your kids will remember; when I was sick, mom always sat with me and made sure I had everything I needed and we watched movies all day.  Regardless of how you handle a crazy schedule all on your own, there are always going to be critics.  Do what you are doing already-the best you can.

  1. Well, raising twins was definitely a challenge especially when it comes to the other one being sick. It was tough at first but then you kinda learn your way through avoiding having the other child get sick as well.

  2. I would scream!! It’s hard to handle sick kids even if it was a only child. Let alone adding another one! These are great tips.
