Cabin fever driving your family a bit crazy? Before you go all “heeeeere’s Johnny!” and start chasing the kids through a creepy maze, check out these five surefire ways to cure that cabin fever!

If anyone can relate to the feeling of being cooped up, it’s me. We’ve had a snow storm every Sunday and temperatures that would make Santa’s elves shiver for weeks on end. While I’m usually all about getting outdoors in the winter to embrace the snow, when your hair freezes if you so much as look out the window, it’s a little hard! So here’s what we do to cure cabin fever!

5 Ways to Cure Cabin Fever

Throwback Movie Night: Credit to my brother for this one. Every week, he gets together with friends for a 90s movie night. Pick a year- or an entire decade if it’s a long storm- and start streaming movies from your favorite movie service. Make some of your favorite snack mix and pass the TruMoo Chocolate Marshmallow hot cocoas!

Snow and Ice Science Experiments: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve opened the freezer and found bits of snow or hunks of ice in there. Jacob is always running different experiments. If it’s too cold to go out and play in the snow, bring some of it indoors. Grab a tub of snow and use food coloring to paint it. See how long it takes for an icicle to melt in a pan on your wood stove. Or, flip it around and fill a balloon with water, then stick it outside to see how long it takes to become an ice ball. Chart your experiments in a scientific journal. Not only are you curing cabin fever, you’re all learning something new in the process!

Fun in the Kitchen:

Get the family together and try to come up with fun new recipes! I’ll be honest, I’m not a master chef. When I make recipes, they’re easy and fun. One thing I rock at, though, is hot beverages. I was a barista for a couple months back when I was a teenager. That, coupled with a decades-long love for coffee, tea and cocoa, has made me pretty good at whipping up some yummy lattes!

Did you know TruMoo is perfect for lattes? I made the one above in just minutes. Just combine 2 ounces of your favorite espresso roast coffee with 6 ounces of steamed TruMoo Chocolate Marshmallow milk (or, if it’s past the Limited Edition’s season, TruMoo Chocolate Milk works perfect too!). Add sweetener if you want, but the TruMoo covers that for me. I like to add a little froth too. I use my espresso machine’s attachment for that, but you can also just whisk the milk really fast in the pan as it steams.

Adding TruMoo to my latte was easy, since we always have it in the house. Jacob drinks it pretty much like I drink coffee. I’m fine with that, though. I’m really happy that he prefers milk to soda, especially at age 9. Plus it’s hormone-free and loaded with calcium for his growing bones. Looking for more delicious recipes? Go Outside Close to Home: Even when it’s incredibly cold out, staying cooped up around the clock will drive you nuts. Getting fresh air is so important. My car isn’t the most reliable, so I’m super scared about going too far in bad weather. Instead, I bundle up with Jacob and we play right out front for about 15 minutes. Even a quick snow ball fight is enough to cure that cooped up cabin fever feeling. If one of us gets too cold, we can easily run back in the house. I also check the advisories to make sure even that 15 minutes is safe.

Personal Space Time: I cannot stress this one enough: sometimes you need to go your separate ways and do something alone. Have everyone grab their favorite book and get a snuggly blanket. I make myself that TruMoo Chocolate Marshmallow Latte, give Jacob a big cup of TruMoo Chocolate Milk and we both do our own thing for a bit. When you’re stuck indoors for months, if you try to spend every waking moment together, you’ll quickly run out of ideas. Then you’ll be stuck staring at each other until spring finally arrives. Which, by the look of the weather report, isn’t any time this week.

  1. this is the first year I have had cabin fever, we usually don’t get a lot of snow but we did this year

  2. We’ve been big on creating recipes and alone time this winter! We have definitely all started to find good on-our-own hobbies lately!

  3. Cabin fever is def. a term in the winter. We’ve got crunchy snow right now (it poured ice rain all day a couple of days ago and it hasn’t melted yet), so we can’t even go out to sled/play.

  4. We would get a bit sick of being inside when I lived up north during the snowy months. A nice time out in the snow and then some hot cocoa helped!

  5. I drag my kids to the community center 3 times a week for fitness. This tends to help break up days so cabin fever doesn’t set in too quickly over the winter. The TruMoo sounds yummy!

Cabin fever hasn’t really set in for us yet this year, but we usually do some day trips to cure it.
