Unilever Project Sunlight Turns the Tables on Child Hunger

Project Sunlight Turns the Tables on Child Hunger

No child should ever go to bed hungry. Ever. Sadly, millions of children do just that every single night. Right HERE in the United States. In our own back yard. Your neighbor’s child could be going to bed hungry.

It deeply saddens me to think about children going to sleep with empty bellies. It incredibly scares me to realize that so many people are unaware of the problem. I once argued with a friend who was so misinformed about the issue. He insisted that no one in America was starving. That it was impossible, that we had enough programs to ensure it didn’t happen.

Those programs do help, but they’re not perfect. Millions still go hungry. While I’ve always managed to barely scrape together enough to feed my son, there are times I’ve stood in the grocery store and cried hysterically at the price of bread. I’m not even joking. This time last year, I was one eviction notice away from homelessness.

My situation has improved a bit in the last year, but I know what it’s like to be scared. I know what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning. I know what it’s like to wonder how you will feed your child when you can barely keep a roof over his head. Thanks to family, food programs and a local food bank, my son never knew what it was like to be hungry, even in that darkest time.

But millions of other children do.

Project Sunlight: Turn the Tables on Child Hunger in America

Unilever Project Sunlight is turning the tables on child hunger, first by making us more aware of the problem right here in the US, and then by giving us the tools to help. One in five children goes to bed hungry. That’s just astounding to me. I urge you to watch this short yet powerful video, then share it with your family and friends. Make yourself aware. Make them aware.

My son wanted to help make a #ShareAMeal image for this post. We worked together to create a super hero graphic, because sharing with others is a true trait of a hero. I also think getting kids involved in creating a unique image really helps drive the message home. We didn’t go hungry because others helped us. Now it’s our turn to help others.

Sharing a meal is as simple as picking up some extra food on your next grocery trip and dropping them off at a local food pantry. Need help figuring out what to buy? Here is a handy mini list, courtesy of Project Sunlight Toolkit:

Child hunger is real. It’s here. It’s in your neighborhood. Is it in your home? Visit Project Sunlight to find out how you can help stop child hunger. If you need help feeding your family, find your nearest food bank and schedule an appointment to sign up. Most will give you emergency food that day.

What do you do to help stop child hunger?
