Which Sunscreens are Safest for Kids with Allergies and Eczema?

Finding sunscreens safe for kids with allergies and eczema can be a challenge, but they do exist! We compared dozens of brands on the Skin Deep Database and came up with what we think are the best!

It’s almost summer which means we start to lather our children up in sunscreen.  If your child suffers from eczema or has skin allergies, you might find it difficult to find a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate their skin.  Rest assured, there are some sunscreens safe for kids with allergies and eczema you can use to block the rays while your children play.

I used Environmental Working Guide to check the quality and safety of the sunscreens I found.  They have a rating system on their website, the lower the number the safer the product.  Check out www.ewg.org/skindeep to test products you already have in your home.

Aveeno Natural Protection Lotion: This has been awarded the National Eczema Association (NEA) Seal of Acceptance.  Completely safe and recommended for people with eczema!  While I could not find this specific product on the EWG website, other Aveeno products rate with a 2 or 3.  It is a bit pricey but anything good usually is.  For a 3 oz. tube it will run you about $10.99.  You can find Aveeno typically at any drugstore like Walgreens, CVS or places like Target and Walmart, or online at Amazon.

Burt’s Bee’s Baby Bee Sunscreen Stick: I love Burt’s Bee’s products!  They are as natural as can be.  Baby Bee Sunscreen is 100% natural.  When I typed this into EWG for ratings, it came up as a 1, very low in everything.  This comes in stick form in 30 SPF and will run you about $10.00 but it is very worth it.  It has been used for kids with sensitive skin, even allergies, and the kids’ skin reacted just fine.  The bonus to this product?  You can also use it on your lips!  Check out www.burtsbees.com for more on their great products.  If you are into knowing how companies started, you can check out Burt’s Buzz on Netflix.

Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen:  Approved for use for people with eczema.  The NEA gave this sunscreen it’s Seal of Acceptance.  Pure & Free Baby is also hypoallergenic, so it is one of the best sunscreens safe for kids with allergies and eczema.  This product gets a rating of 3 with EWG.  Don’t be thrown off by the word ‘baby’!  I have learned that a lot of times when companies slap the word ‘baby’ on their product, it means it is safe enough for babies, which means it is safe enough for everyone!  You can purchase this in either a 3 oz. or a 5 oz. tube from most drug stores or www.neutrogena.com.  It is going to run you about $11.00 to $15.00 but having something that is safe for people with eczema is priceless.
It can be difficult to find sunscreens safe for kids with allergies and eczema that don’t irritate their skin. We all want our children to be comfortable and safe, especially in the summer sun! These three are a great place to start!

  1. I make my own sunscreen to avoid any harmful chemical getting into my sons skin, but I have never associated them with allergies. Interesting read.
