Mosquito Bites Treatment Options

Like sunshine, beaches, and barbeques, mosquito bites also go along with summer. Even if you follow all the available tips on how to avoid mosquito bites, chances are you’re still going to end up with at least a few itchy bumps over the course of the season. Scratching yourself raw is always an option, but it’s really not a pleasant one. Antihistamines work well, but can make you drowsy. Who wants to spend their summer sleeping? There are many different natural or alternative mosquito bites treatment options available, so try a few until you find something that works for you.

Mosquito Bites Treatment Options

  • Deodorant– Eliminate stinky odors and kill the itch at the same time with this mosquito bites treatment option. Just rub some stick deodorant over the bite.
  • Tea bags– the combination of a warm compress and tannin acids in black tea may help alleviate some of the itching sensation caused by mosquito bites. Just soak the bag in warm water for a few minutes, and then wring it out to avoid a mess and apply to the bite.
  • Ice packs. Chilling the area may also help alleviate some of the itchiness, so place an ice pack over the bite for a few minutes. Don’t leave it on too long though, as ice can be damaging to the skin. Try ten minutes on, ten minutes off to give your skin a break.
  • Mouthwash and toothpaste– They’re not just for freshening up your breath! This mosquito bites treatment really does work well. Apply toothpaste or alcohol-based mouthwash directly to the bite. It has to be the white toothpaste, though, not the gel stuff.
  • Essential oils– Lavender and tea tree oil are both effective mosquito bite treatment options, and most people can handle applying them directly to the skin without diluting them first. However, it is usually best to mix even relatively skin-safe essential oils with a little carrier oil, such as olive oil, before applying to the skin.
  • Cross it out. Although it sounds unusual, making an “x” over the mosquito bite by digging your fingernail into it actually works fairly well for short-term relief from the itching. Just don’t dig too hard, you don’t want to break the skin.
  • Lemons, Lime, and Bananas. Become a fruit salad and apply some lemon or lime juice to the bite. Rubbing the inside of a banana peel on the bump may also be an effective mosquito bites treatment option.
  • Store-bought options– Your parents’ and grandparents’ favorite mosquito bite treatment is still one of the best store-bought options available today. While the pink stuff definitely holds a bit more sentimental value, calamine lotion now comes in white and clear formulas as well. Antihistamine lotion is also effective, and won’t make you drowsy. Some people also swear by hemorrhoid cream or Vicks Vapor Rub.

Not all mosquito bites treatment options will work for everyone, and it may take a few tries to find the best one. If your bite becomes an open wound, avoid placing anything on it and see a doctor. Scratching open the bite can cause infection.

  1. Just a quick update, I actually tried the deodorant method the day after I wrote this, and it really worked great! Not only did the bite stop itching, it completely vanished by the next day.

  2. I would recommend the ice pack and then when you are giving your skin a rest, some tea tree. Always seemed to calm the infected area quite quickly with my family.
