How to avoid Mosquito Bites

Summer is almost here: that wonderful time of year when everyone heads to the great outdoors for some fresh air, barbecues, beach fun, and hiking. While the outdoors are filled with many opportunities for adventure, it’s also filled with bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. Nothing ruins a fun day out quite like coming home itchy from all those blood-sucking mosquitoes. Learn how to avoid mosquito bites in the first place, and you won’t have to spend hours scratching and applying random ointments in the hopes that something will bring a little relief!

 Tips avoid Mosquito Bites

Short of staying in your house, sealing up all the windows, and making sure no one ever opens the door for more than five seconds, there is very little you can do to completely avoid the little blood-suckers. These tips, however, will tell you how to avoid mosquito bites so severe that they have you up half the night scratching.

  • Change your wardrobe. Mosquitoes love bright colored clothes, so opt for lighter colors when you’re planning to spend the day outdoors. If white isn’t your thing, go with something in the earth-tone range. Neutral colors are the best.
  • Cover up. While the mere idea of wearing long-sleeves and pants in the summer can cause beads of sweat to pour down your back, covering up as much as possible while hiking through the woods is really one of the best tips on how to avoid mosquito bites.
  • Load up on the garlic. Garlic doesn’t just repel vampires, it also repels other little bloodsuckers. Eating more garlic may help prevent mosquito bites. If you want to go all out, make a garlic powder and water paste, and slather it over your skin. Just don’t plan on getting any hot dates that day!
  • Opt for a less stinky option. If rubbing yourself down with garlic isn’t your cup of tea, opt for a spray made with a more pleasant-smelling essential oil. Peppermint, lavender, and tea tree oil are all popular choices when it comes to figuring out how to avoid mosquito bites.
  • Create a mosquito-repelling garden. If you plan to spend a lot of time on your deck catching up on all those great novels, plant some catnip, pennyroyal, or basil around your sitting area. Sure, you’ll attract all the cats in the neighborhood, but at least you won’t be itchy!
  • Shower often. Mosquitoes love it when you’re all stinky and grimy, so do yourself and everyone around you a favor- shower at least once a day and rinse off if you get particularly ripe. Just don’t use all those pretty floral-scented soaps. If you smell too sweet, you’ll be just as tempting to the female bloodsuckers.
  • Gather the geckos! Okay, this one may be a little less practical, but geckos certainly know how to avoid mosquito bites- they eat numerous of the little bugs in just one minute. Surround yourself with the cute little lizards and you’ll be just fine!
