New Year’s Fitness Resolutions You Won’t Keep

It’s that time of year again, where we make a list of New Year’s Resolutions! After all, a new year means a new you, right?  You have been here before, made New Year’s fitness resolutions and swore you were going to stick with them.  You had great intentions of making it to the gym every day, of running a 10-minute mile and looking fab by February.  Did it work?  Probably not.  Your expectations of yourself were too high.  You set yourself up for failure before you even set foot in that gym.  Don’t make the same mistake this year.  Here are a few common fitness resolutions that will fail, but only if you let them.

I’ll go to the gym every single day: This is a catch 22.  You will never see the gym as busy as you do on January 2.  It is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions made.

Why is doesn’t work: People set their expectations too high for themselves; ultimately setting themselves up for failure.  Also, you start to compare yourself to people who look like they live there.  Just don’t.

How to make it work: Start small.  Make it a goal to go once a week at first. If you are not a runner, please, do not jump on the treadmill and set a goal to run a mile a day; don’t even tell yourself to run a half a mile!  Get on Pinterest and look up ‘running for beginners’ and follow what may look like a very easy build-up.  It should be.  Same goes for everything else at the gym.  Set small goals.  Make yourself a schedule or meet with a personal trainer.  Increase your reps, weight or time each week and you will see success.

I’ll use home DVDs to get fit: This is a great alternative to the gym.  No travel time, no one to compare yourself to, and no need for cute gym clothes.

New Year's Resolutions: Workout DVD

Why it doesn’t work: There is no accountability.  No one watching whether you pop in that workout DVD or not, no one seeing if you are giving it your all.  It can be very distracting.  The laundry dryer buzzer goes off, the dishes are suddenly calling your name and rearranging your sock drawer seems way more appealing than situps.

How to make it work: Tell a friend, your spouse, a neighbor, post it on Facebook that you are starting a new workout routine from home!  Post your workout daily, or better yet, get a friend do come over and do it with you.  Hold each other accountable.  Remember the feeling you get after a great workout the next time you question whether the laundry needs to be done right at that moment.  And the bonus?  The days of the 60 minute workout are over!  So many home DVD companies are creating an amazing workout in 25-30 minutes!  C’mon, who doesn’t have that!?

I’ll get AND use a complete home gym!  You asked for a weight bench or a Bowflex for Christmas in preparation for your New Year’s resolutions.  Do not let it become a clothes rack!

New Year's Resolutions: Fitness Goals You Won't Keep

Why it doesn’t work: It’s an investment piece.  Probably cost a lot of money and you had high expectations of yourself.  Similar to working out to home DVDs, there is very limited accountability unless you draft a friend to workout with you.

How to make it work: Similar to home DVDs, post to Facebook, let the world know what you are doing.  When you put it out there, it makes it real.  Get a friend to come over and spot you on the weights.  Motivate each other!  Create a killer playlist to workout to.  Music always makes a workout go by faster and more enjoyable!

You get the idea?  You understand where you may have failed before?  It’s ok!  It’s a new year and a chance to start over.  You can be that fit and healthy person you want to be.  Remember one thing; it takes 3 weeks- 21 days-to create a habit.  Give yourself a break and give yourself some time.  Fitting in time to workout is something new to you, and we are creatures of comfort.  Meaning it is much easier for us to fall back into our old routines (which include not working out) than to add something new and different to our day.

Have you tried  fitness New Year’s resolutions that failed?  Maybe you had success!  Leave us your comments below and help to inspire others!

  1. I made a simple resolution to do some kind of activity every day and couldn’t even manage that. I’m starting over again now because summer is right around the corner.

  2. i’ve def made these promises to myself a few times! Now ive learned to just eat healthy and get a walk or something in

  3. I set a few resolutions, but did not focus much on them. I just try to focus on my daily changes, hoping it will make a difference.

  4. I am trying to get myself in better shape, for me I have to find something fun so I go to karate twice a week. The first half hour is intense exercise. These are great suggestions.

  5. After regularly using my gym membership for years, I never thought I would use a fitness DVD but when I started really focusing on my health, I found that having a DVD offered variety. I’m a believer!
