Exercise is an important part of keeping your heart healthy, but high impact exercise may be more than your body can handle. If your joints ache and your body protests exercise that is too strenuous, you may need to find some low impact exercises to do. Check out these low impact exercises that will help keep your heart in shape but not overburden your body.

5 Low Impact Exercises for Heart Health

Swimming or Water Aerobics

The natural buoyancy of the human body in water makes any type of water exercise a great choice for low impact. The water provides plenty of support for your muscles and joints but your whole body gets a workout when you swim. If actual swimming isn’t your thing, try walking around a pool or doing a few aqua exercises.

Dancing

Movement will help get your heart pumping, but dancing itself is a great low impact exercise for your heart. Whether you attend a dance class (try Zumba for a fun workout!) like ballroom or square dancing, go out dancing with friends, or simply pop in a “Just Dance” disc in the Wii, dancing moves your body, helps you get in shape and is great for the old ticker.

Strength Training

Simple strength training exercises, such as squats, lunges, and other simple exercises, that incorporate hand weights and dumbbells can shape up those muscles and get your heart pumping for an effective cardiovascular workout.

Yoga

Never underestimate how great yoga can be for your body. Not only does it improve flexibility and muscle tone, it is also a great choice for keeping your heart healthy. Yoga is low impact and you can start off with easy exercises that your body can handle then work your way up to tougher poses and stances. The result is good for your body and even better for your heart.

 Cross-Country Skiing

When it comes to low impact exercises (those that don’t place a great deal of stress on your joints and muscles), cross-country skiing may be one of the best. It works every part of your body, gets your heart rate up for an excellent cardio workout, and it uses simple motions that burn plenty of calories without turning your body into a mass of pain and inflammation.

Give one or more of these low impact exercise options a try — whether you’re trying to get into shape, lose weight, improve health, or all of the above. If you are trying to keep your heart healthy or trying to choose exercises that won’t overtax your heart, any one of these great options will help you stay on track with your health and of course help you get your body in better condition.
