I am always on the lookout for habits to help keep me motivated and fit.  It is not easy, and it can be even harder for a busy mom like me, but it is not impossible.  I like to pass on things I know have worked for me, because if I can do it, so can you (cliche right? I’m serious though).  Here are 5 habits to help keep you motivated and fit.

You never regret the workout you did: I am right there with you, some days it is just easier to skip it, right?  Don’t.  On the days where I push through and do it anyways, I feel amazing after and kick myself for even thinking about skipping it!  It is so much easier to talk ourselves out of a workout than to lace up your sneakers and get it done, so if this is you, focus on how great you will feel after!

Exercise, even if 15 minutes is all you have: There are never enough hours in the day and for some reason, our workout is always at the bottom of the list.  Why?  Everyone knows a happy mom means everyone else is too.  It’s ok to take care of you, I am giving your permission.  That being said, before you jump in the shower, or before you get dinner going, take 15 minutes and do some jumping jacks, burpees, or squats, something to get the blood flowing.  A few minutes is better than nothing at all.  You will feel better.

Mix it up: One of the reasons it was so hard for me to stay motivated is because I got bored.  Shaking up your workout will help to keep you excited (ok maybe that’s not the right word).  One day work on your upper body, do lower body the next and then throw in some yoga.  You would get bored eating the same thing everyday right?  Your workout in the same way, not to mention, if you do the same thing day after day, you aren’t going to get the results you want.  So mix it up, stay consistent, and watch your body change!

Eat: Yes it is ok to eat, in fact you actually need to eat more once you start working out!  Eat real foods.  You don’t need to deprive yourself that slice of pizza, eat it, just don’t scarf down the whole pie.  Depriving yourself of foods you like is setting yourself for failure.  Everything in moderation is just fine (yes, even chocolate!)

Don’t wait for an occasion: This is the worst thing you can do.  Got your class reunion coming up?  Your sister’s wedding?  Do not wait for that occasion to bust your butt.  Going full speed ahead is just a setup for failure.  Goals are great, but don’t wait, just start now.  No crash diets here, you will do damage to your body and only gain back the weight you lost.  I promise.

I am the first to admit, it is not easy trying to stay motivated and get a workout in.  I am a busy mom, but I have learned that I always feel better after getting the blood flowing and moving my body.  I am also less stressed after.  A happy mommy equals happy kids (for the most part).  I just take it day by day, I don’t think about having to do it tomorrow, just today.

  1. Mentally I know I’ll feel better if I exercise. Accountability also motivates me. I work out with people during the week, and I hate canceling on them.
