With three dogs in the house, mealtime can get a little crazy! All my pooches have their own mealtime quirks that make them their unique, lovable selves. Maia is a barker. She eats nice and slow, so she has something left over to bark about when anyone comes close to it. Tasha is a circler. She eats, circles the room, and then eats again. But Coop, he’s the one that truly looks forward to mealtime the most.
Mealtime is quite an important time for Cooper. He spent the first six months of his life in a tiny cage with ten other dogs, never knowing if he’d have enough (or anything) to eat from day to day. When we rescued him, we thought he’d realize that he was getting fed regularly and would never worry about it again. We learned quickly, though, that those food insecurities last a lifetime.
Coop is the MASTER of food thievery! I once saw him steal a fast-food bag. He knew I saw him, so he ran to the dog door and dropped it out the flap, then ran back to me and looked at me like “where’s the evidence? You can’t convict without evidence!” His antics are almost comical, except for the fact that I have to be super cautious to make sure he doesn’t get into dangerous foods.
The best way to me to make sure Cooper feels secure is by feeding him at the same time (or as close to I as possible) every day. I even feed him in the same spot every day. He gets his food right in front of the counter, where we prep it. He likes to have it right away.
While making sure he gets food at the same time every day helps with the security issue, Coop still steals when he has a chance. So I have to keep it interesting too! I do this by making sure he has plenty of variety in his diet.
