As someone with both cats and dogs (and guinea pigs and a parrot!), I can tell you that cats bring a special kind of love into your life that is unlike that of any other pet. Where my dogs are constantly by my side, my cats are content to do their own thing. At night, though, while my dogs are sleeping like, well, dogs, my cats are entertaining us with their crazy antics! Pets deserve Valentine’s Day love too. After all, there are so many benefits to having pets, so we should give them some fringe benefits in return!

Showing how much you love your cat doesn’t have to be expensive! In fact, while cats are often finicky about their food, they’re pretty easy-going when it comes to entertainment! Here are a few easy ideas to get you started:

  • String! Honestly, you could just grab a bit of yarn and spend hours entertaining your cat with it, but why not take it a step further? Tie some feathers, a toy mouse or other enticing objects to the end of the yarn and watch your cats race around as you pull it along.
  • Baby toys. When my son was a baby, he had a bunch of balls that went into this big dinosaur’s mouth. At night, we’d often hear the cats playing with his toys. When my son outgrew the toys, they become sole property of the kitties! The great thing about baby toys: they’re big enough to prevent choking hazards.
  • Catnip. Cats absolutely love catnip! Guess what? You can easily grow it indoors any time of the year. It’s super inexpensive-less than a few dollars for a plant- and hard to kill. Trust me, I have the “black thumb of death” when it comes to plants and even I can keep catnip alive. The hardest part? Keeping kitty from eating it all before it grows!
  • Cardboard box condo. Forget the expensive “cat condos” in stores, you can make your own for free with cardboard boxes. Any cat owner knows that the moment you empty a box, your cat is in it! Stack boxes and make holes for them to climb through. Add a comfy blanket and you’re good to go.
  • “Heated” bed. Show how much you love your cat by making a “heated” cat bed for them. Just fill a pillow case with uncooked white rice. Sew the open end shut. Warm it in the microwave for about a minute (make sure it’s not too hot!) then plop it down in front of your cat. She’ll get the hint pretty quick.

  1. Thank you for the wonderful posting. I LOVE that white cat!! It could very well me mine -lol- I use this cat litter all the time now since I had the opportunity to review the product. It’s amazing!!

  2. Being a cat lover I have used many, many brands of litter over the years with varying results. I think I will give Arm and Hammer a try.

  3. My cats are not that big on string (and after being at the vet when a cat was brought in screaming in pain because it ate it and the string wrapped around its intestines, I am actually quite glad) but they love shoe laces

Mine are spoiled rotten, forget making them heated beds, I have unplugged stuff to plug in their beds in the sunshine they want to sit in before

  4. We have four cats and three kittens who will be going to new homes soon, we could really use a good cat litter.

  5. I always liked Arm and Hammer litter products! I think that the only problem I have with them is the cost for the very little amount of litter you get.

  6. I’m not sure what litter my boyfriend buys. I know it clumps, but does not completely seal the odor. Just the other day, my mastiff decide to stand up to the table the litter box is on and try to put his head in it.

  7. my kitten loves toys! i think he has more than my son…balls and long pieces of strings tied to a stick are his favourite toys right now.

  8. We will be getting a cat or cats :) when we move to a new home in the country. Right now we have 11 rabbits :) But a cat is definitely on the list! I will remember all of these ideas for when we do :)

  9. This stuff is really amazing! Worth the slightly higher cost. You will save in the end because you are not constantly changing it.

  10. My cats loooove catnip and fabric ribbons! I only give them the ‘nip about once a month so it doesn’t lose it’s appeal and we all play with the ribbon together (2 kittehs and the hooman). All the toys eventually and up between the headboard of my bed and the radiator, so then I head back to the store to replenish the supplies.

I will say be careful with paper ribbons. I have one cat I have to lock it away from as she will bite of lengths to eat and that cannot be healthy for many reasons!

  11. These are great tips – my cats love hair elastics (although I try to hide them well). Now that we have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes a multi-cat formula that really works is key for us. Thanks for the review!

  12. I show how much I love my cat with lots and lots of petting/ scratching; she’s a senior now, she’s not into much anymore.

  13. Our spoiled cats get all these things. All four of them! We’ve only used Tidy Cat clumping litter, but I wouldn’t mind trying this kind out.

  14. Chrystal Thurston

I didn’t have cats when I had babies so I hadn’t heard about the baby toys but I will get them some, thank you!

  15. the tips are great i have 3 girls they are my babies they are spoiled they love everything you can’t bring a box in the house without them knowing it them claim it for themselves as for catnip oh my i had bought catnip balls from the animal welfare and it was fresh and put it in my purse what a mistake my cats just about tore my purse apart just to get at the catnip balls mind you it was funny watching them i had to fight them just to give the balls to them it was priceless cats are funny when the want to be

  16. my boyfriend and i spoil our cats rotten, we have three and we are always bringing home something new for them to play with! We just bought them a new scratching post!

  17. I have 3 three cats – two of which are siblings that found in the ditch when I was out for a walk. One of my cats likes to play with feathers, one likes the styrofoam that you use to insulate pipes and the other one likes cat toys.

  18. I like all your hints. One thing I would caution, though, is not to leave string or yarn unattended because cats can ingest it and do harm to themselves. I really like the heated bed idea.

  19. I like the idea of giving cats baby toys. They would probably be safer for the cat to play with since they are meant to go in a baby’s mouth.

  20. My two cats receive cat treats all the time (once a day!). I will also look for special toys that I know they will have playing with. I have one cat that goes crazy for catnip and the other just turns his nose up at it

  21. Good ideas. We grow “cat mint” in our front yard and our cat loves it – sometimes he’ll roll around on it in the summer. We did dry and freeze some of that mint for him.

    Cheers.

  22. Our cats get special treats all the time. We grow catnip for them in the summer. I had never heard of the baby toy idea but it makes so much sense. The most important thing I do for my cats is keep them inside where they’re safe.

  23. Love Arm & Hammer cat litters, it certainly makes a difference. I had clipped the ribbons off a top I had bought (you know, those keep-it-on-the-hanger ribbons..) tied them together and the cat relocates that from one end of the house to the other. And the ribbons haven’t shredded yet! Otherwise its a spoonful of canned food once a day, dry food available all day long, and since I cannot go into the kitchen without a little shadow appearing behind me, he also gets treats and a bit of skim milk on occasion. With a big bay window to sleep in as well, he is certainly a fully spoiled cat. He won’t think so though.. :)

  24. We are taking care of our daughter’s cats and we love having them around. We have catnip for them, but I didn’t know that they like baby toys! lol We are going to have to give them a couple!

  25. Great tips to keep a cat happy. We pet sit my aunt’s cat sometimes so I am always looking for advice. I am going to recommend the arm and hammer to her because she has been talking about switching brands for her cats.

  26. I can’t believe how much that first photo looks like my cat from when I was a little girl! Love it!! BTW – I agree that Arm & Hammer has some of the best products out there.

  27. I have to say that Arm and Hammer is the best for controlling litter odors. I try to deter my cat from playing with string. I crochet and knit and always catch her gnawing at the yarn I need to be using. Not fun!

  28. My cats are quite old not and very picky. They get that way when they get old. I’m not allowed to switch cat litters or they will let me know their displeasure by peeing somewhere else because they won’t pee on the new litter.

    1. Oh geez, my cats are that way with treats. We’ve alternated litters for a long time, so they don’t seem to care. There is one brand they don’t like. With treats, though, they howl at us until we get the ones they like. The white cat in the first picture is the worst. She’s 17 now and very picky.

  29. I definitely learned about the baby toys bit when we had our son! My cat loves the baby toys more than his own toys! That actually works out pretty nicely, since cat toys always have little parts that aren’t safe for babies. The cardboard box condo sadly wouldn’t work for my cat, he’s a 15+ lb. Manx cross, and much too fat for cardboard boxes, haha. But we have a cat condo for him, which he loves. The heated cat bed is genius! I know he’d go crazy for that! I am going to have to try that for him. Thanks for the great idea :).

    1. I just came up with the heated cat bed as I was writing this. I tried it out and my cats loved it. Your cat sounds gorgeous! I have a rather fat cat, but she has no excuse, as she’s just a lazy domestic short-hair. She used to be so sleek and fit, then she decided her active days were over.
