When a species of animal gains notoriety for being a pest and bully to their owners, it makes one start to question why anyone would want to own one at all. The internet has exposed cats for what they really are: sneaky and scheming. However, this isn’t always the case. There are plenty of friendly cat breeds available that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Thinking of switching to dogs? These five friendly cat breeds might change your mind.

Friendly Felines for Families

Chartreux

Known for their adorable smiling faces and calm demeanor, Chartreux cats are extremely social, loyal cats that make great pets. Their soft coats, quiet communicatory chirping, and fondness for playtime makes these cats a favorite among cat owners. Despite their plush-like appearance, Chartreux cats are agile and sporty, making them a great friend and partner in play.

Siamese

This famous cat breed is known for being one of the most intelligent breeds of cat, as well as one of the most attention seeking. It’s true, whenever there is a Siamese cat in the room, it will vie to be in someone’s spotlight, be it another cat, a human adult, or even a little baby. Their delicate, little cat faces are incapable of expressing any form of menace and they will follow you everywhere you go. The Siamese cat is one breed of cat that is truly interested in the daily routine of its master.

Japanese Bobtail

Finding a friendly cat can be an adventure, but it’s not an impossible journey by any means. On the other hand, finding a cat that is friendly and gets along with dogs can be a nearly impossible task. Enter the Japanese Bobtail, this cat is not only friendly and attention seeking with humans, it’s good with dogs and even has a few canine-like tendencies of its own — like carrying toys around in its mouth. According to legend, the Japanese Bobtail will spread good luck to its owner if treated will love and affection.

Abyssinian

Speaking of cats with a tendency to get along with different animals, the Abyssinian is one of the most versatile cats in the feline kingdom. Due to their impressive athleticism and imposing height, the Abyssinian is a very eager and interested breed that loves to scout out points of interest and perform self-dictated reconnaissance missions to gather information on whatever they find curious. These cats are amazing swimmers too, so don’t be surprised if you come home to a wet cat. Active cats run the risk of hurting themselves, so resources like Kuddly are helpful for monitoring a feline’s health.

Sphynx

Universally regarded as the most friendly cat (if not one of the weirdest looking), these hairless companions have proven throughout time that they are by far the friendliest breed of cat. What sets the Sphynx apart from other breeds? While cats often warm up to new people eventually, the Sphynx is one of the few breeds of cat that embraces strangers and actively seeks out cuddles from day one. Without any hair, they need another way to keep warm, and a human companion is the perfect tool. They’re willing to adapt to the wishes of their owner and wiggle their way into becoming the perfect cat on a case-by-case basis. Truly an impressive feat.

Adopting a cat can be scary because the fear of a mischievous, aggressive, aloof cat at looms over many feline enthusiasts. Cats can be crazy, but by adopting within breeds that are known for their kindness, an amazing bond can be formed with these oftentimes vexing creatures.

  1. Though I am not a feline-person I find the Siamese and the Sphynx the cutest amongst all cats. I see why they are popular among cat-lovers. Both are cute in their own ways.

  2. We have a Siamese. She is so loving and follows me around like a dog. She even loves my husband. She is getting older but still has a lot of energy.

  3. I have a Siamese and she is by far the most friendly cat we have had. She knows no strangers and wants to be everyone’s friend. She begs to be petted and will get up on her hind legs and shove her head into your hand. She’s a little mischievous but we love her and would highly recommend this type of cat.

  4. I had no idea that breeds of cats had different personalities… but it makes perfect sense since other animals do. I have had both experiences of wonderful and absolutely bonkers. (The bonkers was a Maine Coon Cat, btw)

  5. That’s good to know. They will be great as house pets if you have kids. Thanks for the list! I never owned a cat before.
