This movie is NOT a sequel to the live-action flicks that starred Neil Patrick Harris. It’s actually a reboot and totally CGI, rather than a mix of CGI and live actors. Why the reboot? Sadly, the 2nd Smurfs movie didn’t do too stellar in the box office. As cute as the other movies were (I do adore NPH), I think The Lost Village is more true to the original Smurfs story line.

Actor John Goodman was first considered for the role of Papa Smurf, before the role went to Mandy Patinkin. As you probably know, Patinkin played Inigo Montoya in the best family movie of all time, The Princess Bride. He’s played in dozens of other roles over the years, including Rube in another favorite of mine, Dead Like Me and, for a few seasons, as the head of the BAU in Criminal Minds.

Smurf: The Lost Village went through several theater release date changes before the current release date of April 7, 2017 was set. First, it was announced on October 5, 2013, that it would be released on August 14, 2015 but on May 1, 2014, that date was changed to August 5, 2016. Then, in March of 2015, the release date was moved once again to March 31, 2017. A year later, in March of 2016, the release date was changed again to its current date of April 7, 2017.
