While there have been two previous Smurfs live-action/computer-animated movies, this film is unrelated to both of them. The first was the 2011 The Smurfs and the second was the 2013 Smurfs 2. Both of these movies are loosely based on the Smurfs comics and are adapted from the Smurfs television series, which aired for 9 seasons on NBC, from September 12, 1981 to December 2, 1989.

In the Smurfs: The Lost Village, Smurfette and her friends Clumsy Smurf, Brainy Smurf and Hefty Smurf journey through the Forbidden Forest, only to encounter the evil Gargamel and discover the Smurf’s biggest secret. The movie features the voice cast of Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy Smurf, Danny Pudi as Brainy Smurf, Joe Manganiello as Hefty Smurf and Rainn Wilson as Gargamel.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Smurfs or need a refresher course, here we go! Gargamel is an evil wizard that is the enemy of the Smurfs. Papa Smurf is the leader of the Smurfs and is easily recognized by his red clothing and white beard. He is also an expert at making potions and spells. Smurfette was created by Gargamel and originally had black hair but not her hair color is blonde. Hefty Smurf has extraordinary strength; Brainy Smurf is the smartest of the Smurfs and pretty much an expert on everything and Clumsy Smurf is slow and dull but also friendly and lovable.

The official synopsis for the movie reads- “In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does.  Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!”
