Queen of Katwe is an upcoming biographical drama movie that is due to hit theaters on September 23, 2016. On May 9, 2016, Walt Disney Pictures released the movie poster and on May 10, 2016, the official movie trailer was released.

The official movie trailer for Queen of Katwe starts with this quote:

Then, the trailer tells the story of Phiona, her excellence in the game of chess and her dream to become a world chess champion.

Queen of Katwe is the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who was raised in the slums of Katwe, located in Kampala, Uganda. Phiona is a 10-year old girl, being raised by her hard-working mother and meets Robert Katende, who teaches children in the neighborhood how to play the game of chess. Phiona shows an interest in the game and also shows she has great potential for the game. Robert Katende becomes her chess mentor and also teaches her to read and write. Reluctant at first, Phiona’s mother helps her daughter peruse her potential, hoping she will leave the life of poverty behind her.

Queen of Katwe Movie Trivia

The movie is set to star David Oyelowo as Robert Katende and Lupita Nyong’o as Harriet Mutes. The main role of Phiona Mutes is set to be played by newcomer Ugandan actress Madina Nalwanga. However, you will remember David Oyelowo in the 2012 Middle of Nowhere as Brian, 2013 The Butler as Louis Gaines and the 2014 Selma as Martin Luther King Jr. Also, Lupita Nyong’o starred in the 2013 12 Years a Slave as Patsey and the 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Maz Kanata.

In an interview, Lupita Nyong’o said that it was the Ugandan culture that surprised her the most during filming for the movie. She said, “There is an ease in the Ugandan demeanor that is very welcoming. I love the melody of the accent, the food, the music and the people’s inherent style. There is a resilience of spirit in Uganda. The slum of Katwe is a tough place to live, but you see these people living there with dignity.”

Sylvia Owori, a fashion mogul from Uganda, bought a part as an extra in the film through a fundraiser auction for Maisha Film Labs.

Queen of Katwe looks to be an incredibly powerful and uplifting movie that the entire family can enjoy.

  1. I agree, this looks like a super inspiring movie to watch. Disney has been coming out with a bunch of movies that I would never have guessed were made by them.
