3-legged race

Nothing says family like tying yourselves to one another!  The only thing you need for this is rope.  Tie the right leg of Grandpa to the left leg of Aunt Jean; now they have to run to the finish line.  However many people you have depends on how many teams of 2 you have.  Make sure someone takes video; you will want to rewatch this race later!  For added fun, you tie more than 2 people together and see how far they get.

Tug-O-War

This one is always fun for the kids and the adults (I think the adults have more fun actually).  Again, you need rope, but this one should be long and strong, like a rope you would use for a boat.  Divide your family into 2 teams, not necessarily equal in number, but more equal in size and strength.  It wouldn’t be very fair to put 10 kids on one side and 10 adults on the other, so you understand what I mean.  Now try to pull the other team across the line.

Capture the Flag

What a classic!  I don’t think I have played this since I was a kid, but we have a family reunion coming up, I am proposing we play this.  So you have 2 teams, and 2 ‘flags’ (anything can be used as a flag), but you also need a large open area.  Each team hides their flag.  Select someone to be the flag guard for each team.  The object of the game is to capture the other team’s flag without getting caught.  If you get tagged, you go into their ‘jail’.  The only way you get out, is by being tagged by someone, but be careful, you can easily be tagged back into jail if you don’t make it back to your side of field!  You are safe on your side of the field, so have a game plan!

Kickball

I loved this game in the school yard, and we used to play it at our family reunions when I was a kid.  We had the luxury of having a baseball diamond across the street but you don’t have to get all fancy and technical.  It does make a difference in the kind of ball you have, so go out and get the rubbery ball, you know softer and larger than a soccer ball, but not made of plastic, it is rubber. They actually do make official kickball balls!  The game is a lot like baseball, 3 bases and a home plate, a pitcher, catcher and all the other regular players on the field.  All the same rules apply too, including fouls and home runs.  Have fun!

Family trivia

This can get interesting!  Before the reunion, have everyone write down 1 or interesting facts they know of each family member.  Maybe you can have them email it to you, or they can bring it with them and just add them all to a giant bowl.  This can be a good way to get the games going; everyone sit around at lunch and while eating pass the bowl around the table and each person picks one out to read.  You might learn a few things about some family members that you didn’t know!  Come to think of it; I think I might add this to our reunion as well!

My family loves outdoor games.  Not every family does, at first.  They might think it silly when you first bring it up to them.  But deep down inside, they are dying to play; you just might have to get the ball rolling (no pun intended).  We are all just kids at heart right?

  1. Wow, first, I just noticed you live in Northfield, NH – so do my youngest daughter, son-in-law, and my granddaughters!!

Secondly, they would be the ones interested in games like this for outdoor activities and family gatherings.

Thirdly, back when we used to go to a big reunion gathering every 3 years, our favorite activities were horseshoes, bean bag toss, and volleyball; in the water, it was canoe races around a tiny island in the lake.

  2. I love the photo of your kids enjoying their outdoor game. Now that the weather is warmer, it will be easier to find outdoor things to do… :)
