Entertaining my son during the summer is a major challenge, especially when I’m on a tight budget. I work from home, so I need to find ways to keep him busy and relatively quiet for at least a few hours.  While I do alter my schedule to include fun outdoor activities that we can do together, there are times of the day where I need to focus on work. My son is an only child. I try to have his friends come over as often as possible so he has someone to play with. On the days no one is around, though, I get that “I’m bored” face quite a bit.  Netflix is a lifesaver for those moments!

The “I’m Bored” face is the bane of a work-at-home parent!

I was ecstatic when Netflix added the “Just for Kids” section because it meant my son could go through the selections on his own without coming across something scary or completely inappropriate. Now, they have Netflix.com/Families, a whole new family-friendly section full of awesome suggestions.  When I need some time to do my work, I can send Jake up to his “nest” in the only air-conditioned room in the house and he can enjoy his favorite shows or discover a few new ones!

Netflix.com/Families changes that bored face to a happy face!

Netflix Families has several really neat curated streams. My personal favorite is the “Classics to Share with Your Kids” stream. We found The Magic Schoolbus on there. Jake already loves the books, so he was excited to see that there was a cartoon too. I was excited to see some of my favorites as a kid, including She-Ra and He-Man! Anyone who grew up in the 80s will love this stream!

In addition to just plain entertaining movies like Mirror Mirror and other fun family movie night films, Netflix Families has a few great sections for educational fare. “TV For Curious Kids” has some really cool nature and space features, while “Show Your Kids the World” gives families a chance to take a vacation without leaving the house.

Both streams offer the perfect opportunity to take what you learn from the shows and apply them to the “real world.” For example, if you’re planning a trip to the museum this summer, watch Walking with Dinosaurs beforehand so your kids can share their newfound knowledge with you as they check out the exhibits.

From Family Movie Night to “Me” Time with Netflix

Netflix.com/Families not only features a myriad of great kids programming, educational television and flash-back cartoons, it’s full of fantastic family movie night suggestions. Whether you’re planning a fun family movie night for everyone or need to catch up on a little “me” time after the kids go to bed, you may discover something you didn’t even know you wanted to see!

You don’t have to be a member to check out all the offerings on Netflix.com/Families. You can head over there, check out what they have, then decide if you want to sign up. At $7.99 a month, though, the savings over going out to a movie theater are astronomical. With tickets at theaters averaging about $8 per person, a family of five could get an entire year of Netflix for the amount of two trips to the theater.

One of the best things about Netflix is that it’s available on so many devices. Watch it on your laptop, XBOX 360, Wii, tablet, SmartTV or Playstation 3!

Netflix.com/Families is a new destination designed to meet your family’s summertime entertainment needs. On Netflix.com/Families, parents can find lists of movies and TV shows for all kinds of special summer moments.
