Halloween Movies for Kids

Coraline is a 2009 stop-motion animated fantasy horror movie that is based on the 2002 book of the same name by Neil Gaiman. The movie is about Coraline Jones, an adventurous 11-year-old girl who discovers another world behind a secret door in her home. The world is an idealized parallel one, but she soon discovers the new world has a dark secret. Coraline features the voices of Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones and Teri Hatcher as Mel Jones.

Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride is a 2005 stop-motion animated musical fantasy movie. The movie centers on Victor, a shy groom who is practicing his vows for his upcoming wedding to Victoria. What Victor doesn’t realize is that he is reciting his vows in the presence of a young woman, Emily, who is deceased. When Emily rises from the grave, she believes Victor has married her. Corpse Bride features the voices of Johnny Depp as Victor Van Dort, Helena Bonham Carter as Emily and Emily Watson as Victoria Everglot.

The Little Vampire

The Little Vampire is a 2000 comedy horror movie that is based on the 1979 series of children’s books by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. The movie is about Tony Thompson, a lonely boy who befriends Rudolph, a vampire who is fleeing from Rookery, a vampire hunter. The Little Vampire stars Jonathan Lipnicki as Tony Thompson, Rollo Weeks as Rudolph and Jim Carter as Rookery.

Tower of Terror

Tower of Terror is a 1997 supernatural thriller movie that is based on the Disney Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. However, the movie has no connection to The Twilight Zone. The movie revolves around Buzzy Crocker, a disgraced reporter who is sent on assignment, with his niece Anna, to investigate an abandoned luxury hotel where five people disappeared mysteriously 60 years ago. Tower of Terror stars Steve Guttenberg as Buzzy Crocker and Kirsten Dunst as Anna Petterson.

The Addams Family

The Addams Family is a 1991 fantasy comedy movie that is based on the cartoon characters created by Charles Addams. It is the prequel to the 1993 movie Addams Family Values. The movie is about a con artist, Gordon Craven, who pretends to be Uncle Fester Addams, who has been gone for over two decades after a falling out with his brother Gomez. The Addams Family stars Raul Julia as Gomez Addams, Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams and Christopher Lloyd as Gordon Craven/Uncle Fester.

While these Halloween movies for kids are pretty tame overall, remember that every child is different. My son, for example, was terrified of Coraline but could watch The Little Vampire over and over. It’s a good idea to either screen the movies ahead of time or check out IMDB’s parent guide to find out what you’re getting into!
