Woohoo! Easter is almost here, which means it’s also almost time for spring break for my son. Let me tell you; we can definitely use it! With Easter falling so late this year, it feels like it’s been an eternity since his winter break. Okay, so we did have off almost a week when nature dumped over two feet of snow on us last month, but shhh, that doesn’t count.
Since my son will be home for almost a week for Easter, I try to come up with fun ways to fill our days together. He’s had a rough few months, so it’s even more important to me than ever that he has a wonderful vacation. Movie nights are one of our favorite things to do together, so I thought it would be fun to build on that and plan a whole day of colorful and creative Easter activities surrounding one of his favorite movies, RIO. It’s currently available to download on Digital HD!
3 Colorful Easter Activities for a RIO movie night
RIO is one of our all-time favorite movies to watch together, and it’s perfect for Easter break! We saw it in theaters when it first came out, and the adventures of Blu and Jewel just captured our hearts. I love the message behind the movie, how you can do anything you set your mind to if you just believe strongly enough and rely on a little help from your support system. Blu goes from a flightless bird to a hero with the help of Jewel!
Since RIO is all about the vibrant colors of the rainforest, I thought it would be fun to incorporate that into our movie night activities. Make it even more exciting by keeping the film a secret from your kids and have them try to guess based on the activities that you do together during the day! Here are a few of my favorite ideas that you can try at home with your kids!
Movie Clue Egg Hunt
You can’t really have Easter without an egg hunt, right? No matter how old my son gets, he still loves hunting for colorful eggs. Turn the egg hunt into a clue about the movie by swapping out pastel colors for the rich jewel tones of RIO.
Fill the eggs with things that have to do with the rain forest where Blu and Jewel have their adventure. Ideas include temporary tattoos from the movie or small rainforest animal figures. For older kids that can read, you can also jot down some movie quotes to hide in the eggs.
Mask Craft
After your egg hunt, sit down at the table to create a fun mask craft! I love this idea because it’s not a crazy obvious clue. Rio de Janeiro is well known for Carnival, a massive festival filled with food, vibrant floats and, of course, masked revelers.
To make it, you’ll need:
- Glow in the dark glitter glue
- Hot glue and glue gun (parental supervision suggested for younger kids)
- Colorful glitter
- Feathers (a variety pack of colors and sizes)
- Eye masks
- Other embellishments optional (beads, sequins, and other colorful items)
Cover the mask with the glow in the dark glitter glue, then sprinkle liberally with glitter. Once that dries, use the glue gun to add other embellishments.
RIO-Themed Snacks
If your kids still haven’t figured out the theme for movie night, this one will definitely drive home the message! It can be as involved or as simple as you want it to be. For example, if you’re short on time (or not feeling crafty), you can add some fun colorful candies to your popcorn!
If you want to get a little fancier, though, you can really go all out and make this adorable bird made with fruits that Blu and Jewel would enjoy (plus a few tasty extras the kids will love)! Here’s how to make it!
Ingredients:
- 1 mango
- 1 peach
- 2 mini marshmallows
- 2 chocolate chips
- Pretzels
Directions:
Cut both the mango and peach in half. Scoop out the mango fruit from the peel pushing the mango half against the side of a glass. The fruit and skin will stay intact. Slice each half of the mango.
Put half of the mango back inside the peel and place in the center of the plate face down. This half of the mango will make the body.
Use half of the peach to make the head. The other half of the sliced mango can be used to form the wings, beak, and feet. Make the eyes by pressing a chocolate chip into the center of a mini marshmallow and placing them on the face. The pretzels can be used to make a branch for the parrot the sit on.
Keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve. To eat the mango, just lift off the peel and enjoy the slices.
After you’re done with these colorful Easter activities, the movie night theme will be obvious! It’s time to grab your favorite cuddly blanket, find your spots on the sofa and grab RIO on Digital HD to escape on an adventure with Blu and Jewel!
