Some of the best family movies came out during the first five years of the 21st century. From sports movies to epic fantasies to hilarious humor, the first half of the first decade offered something for everyone. It makes sense that 2000-2005 would feature such amazing films. It was like the dawn of a new age in many ways. How many generations get to pass through to a new millennium, after all? Family filmmakers were really bringing their A-game! Here are some of the best family movies from 2000-2005.

Remember the Titans

Remember the Titians is a 2000 sports drama film that is based on the 1971 true story of Herman Boone, an African American football coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The film stars Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Donald Faison and Nicole Ari Parker. When a high school that features only white students integrates with a nearby high school that features only black students, things don’t exactly go as planned. Each of the two schools are well-known for their football teams but now those two teams are one. The coach from the black school is picked to head the team now, making the other coach develop feelings of animosity. Can these two coaches work together or will they butt heads and destroy everything?

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2001 high fantasy movie that is based on the 1954 book, The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkein. This is the first movie in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, followed by The Two Towers in 2002 and The Return of the King in 2003. The movie stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Sala Baker, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Ian Holm and Andy Serkis. A hobbit named Frodo ends up in possession of an ancient ring that was thought to be lost. Frodo must make the journey to Mount Doom to destroy the ring, to ensure the owner, a Dark Lord, doesn’t continue his reign. However, Frodo isn’t alone on his journey. He has the company of a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, two humans and three hobbit friends. The fellowship treks night and day, in harsh weather and across dangerous terrain, facing evil and danger along the way.

 

School of Rock

School of Rock is a 2003 musical comedy film starring Jack Black, Joan Cusack, Mike White, Sarah Silverman and Miranda Cosgrove. When Dewey is fired as the guitar player for his own band, he devises a plan to make money to pay his rent and bills. He pretends to be his friend, taking a job as a teacher at a private school. He befriends some of the students in his class, talented musicians. He decides to form a band to take part in a music competition, to win the prize money and be recognized as the talented musician that he is. What happens when his plan goes awry?

  1. I agree on one: Lord of the Rings. I didn’t want to go to the movies to watch it with my husband. I thought it’d be dumb. I actually enjoyed it. He does have good taste in movies after all.

  2. I haven’t seen school of rock, but I have seen LOTR and I am not sure that is entirely a great little kid movie. :) My little guy was quite afraid of some of the characters.:)

  3. Of course LOTR should be there!! I don’t do football movies – mostly because the brain is a human’s most valuable resource. The damage through this sport is heart-breaking.

    The Incredibles was 2004 and there are a lot valuable lesson about being a stronger together as a family, but also finding your own individual strengths – love it!
