A Wrinkle in Time is an upcoming movie that has pretty much everything you could ask for in a movie: adventure, fantasy and science fiction, and a stellar cast! 1. Zathura: A Space Adventure

Zathura: A Space Adventure is a 2005 science fantasy, adventure movie that is loosely based on the 2002 illustrated book- Zathura- by Chris Van Allsburg. Danny, Walter and Lisa Budwing are siblings who play an old board game they find in their basement and find themselves transported to outer space, where an astronaut helps them complete the game and return home. The movie stars Jonah Bobo, Josh Hutcherson (yep, it’s Peeta as a tween!), Kristen Stewart and Dax Shepard.

2. The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass is one of my all-time favorite movies like A Wrinkle in Time. The 2007 fantasy adventure movie is based on Philip Pullman‘s best-selling novel by the same name (although it was known as The Northern Lights in other countries). Lyra Belacqua lives in a parallel universe and sets out on a journey to save some of the children, who have been kidnapped by The Gobblers, a mysterious organization. The movie stars Dakota Blue Richards. While the books were definitely better, the film version was a fun family movie night flick. Unfortunately, they never finished out the series on the big screen.

3. Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a 2008 science fantasy, adventure movie and is the prequel to the 2012 movie- Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Professor Trevor Anderson, a volcanologist, sets out on a mission, to a lost world in the Earth’s center, to find out why his brother went missing. He is accompanied by his nephew, Sean Anderson. The movie stars Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. Side note: did you know that Hutherson starred in so many big movies before playing Peeta in The Hunger Games? I thought he looked familiar, but never made the connection!

4. Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 adventure, fantasy, sci-fi movie and is the prequel to Avatar 2, set to be released on December 18, 2020 and Avatar 3, set to be released on December 17, 2021. Jake Sully is a disabled, ex-Marine, who sets out on a mission to Pandora. The movie stars Sam Worthington and went on to achieve such success that it has its own theme park inside Disney World! It’s called Pandora (not to be confused with the streaming music service) and you’ll find it in Animal Kingdom.

5. Prometheus

Prometheus is a 2012 sci-fi, adventure, mystery movie and is the sequel to the 1979 movie- Alien, the 1986- Aliens, the 1992- Alien 3 and the 1997- Alien Resurrection and the prequel to the 2017- Alien: Covenant. The crew of the spaceship, Prometheus, lands on a distant moon and soon discover they are not alone. The movie stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce. This one is a bit scarier than the others on our list, so it’s more for the older members of your family. Think date night in versus family movie night.

    1. My father got rid of our television and opted taking my older brother and i to the public library every few weeks. He let us choose our books. He always picked one that he would read to us every night. As kids, He read Boxcar Children, Secret Garden, and the C.S Lewis Series called the Chronicles of Narnia.. Those were my favorite! As we got older he read the Newspaper out loud and articles from Readers Digest. Eventually, we read them on our own. I always miss story time. Especially the ones he made up! Miss my dad.
