With summer finally here, it’s the perfect time outdoor fun! While kids are thrilled school is out for the summer, it’s up to us to make sure they don’t lose all their hard-earned knowledge from the previous year. Did you know that, according to the Johns Hopkins University for Summer Learning, the average kid loses about 2.6 months of academic learning over the summer. We can help prevent summer brain drain by using active outdoor play as a way to spark a child’s imagination, curiosity and learning!

Here are some awesome mom hacks for fun alphabet scavenger hunt ideas that will keep kids of all ages learning throughout the entire season!

Alphabet Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Affiliate links included below.

1- Create an Alphabet Acorns Scavenger Hunt with the Alphabet Acorns Activity Set from Learning Resources! Moms (or kids!) can hide acorns around a park or field. Create a map in advance so the kids will have clues about where to find the acorns. The one who finds the most acorns, wins!

2- Have your child find something outside that starts with every letter of the alphabet from A-Z (i.e. airplane, bug, car, etc.). You can easily find printables on Pinterest to help them keep track of what they have found!

3- Play the game while they are in the car on a summer road trip and spot items outside with each letter (or inside the car) that start with each letter of the alphabet!

Engaging kids’ senses in the great outdoors makes it a better hands-on learning experience in an environment that is perfect for pretend play. I truly believe that kids learn so much more AND retain that knowledge better when they’re actually having fun.

  1. We play a lot of board games. We also do a lot of treasure hunts outside with directions that involve a lot of math.

  2. Amanda Alvarado

We like to play board games and dd has an online based math game that she does for school as well as regular reading (which isn’t really a game!)

  3. Mary Beth Wylie

These are so cute! I can think of so many fun activities we can do with these that my kids would love!

  4. Used to play with outside chalk when my grandkids were smaller. My grandson loved Legos so much he is a teenager and will still build Lego items
