If you have a teenage son or daughter you are surely aware of the harm bullying can do to them now as well as their life long term.  Teen bullying statistics and your child is something we want to address to help parents know more of what to expect in these important years.  While it is our goal to be a source for those who have been victimized, we are also hoping to impact our communities by helping parents prevent bullying.  We have put together a few simple points to keep in mind as your child heads closer to the teen years.  Along with all the traditional teen issues that will arise, we hope to help prevent bullying from becoming an issue that brings them down.

TEEN BULLYING STATISTICS AND YOUR CHILD

Shocking Statistics:

  • Suicide is the 3rd most common cause of death in teenagers and young adults today
  • 10-14 year old girls are at a much higher risk of suicide than any other demographic on file
  • Statistics show that 27.8% of students ages 12-18 have been bullied in school
  • 17% of students surveyed admitted to being a victim of Cyberbullying
  • 50% of female bullying is psychological and emotional
  • On average only 54% of school staff have received sufficient training regarding bullying and/or prevention

How Can We Help?

  • Get Active In Our Schools.  By volunteering to lead groups against bullying, or offering healthy after school programs that promote self worth and value in teens we can combat the effects teen school bullying may have.
  • Build Up Self Esteem.  In your child and their friends, you can impact the result of bullying by making sure they have a strong foundation of love, acceptance and self worth in their own home.
  • Speak Out Against Violence.  Talk about alternatives to physical violence, abuse and physical discipline with your children and their peers.
  • Listen To And Watch Your Child And Their Behavior.  As a parent you know your child better than anyone else.  Changes in their behavior, appearance and friend groups are signs that bullying may be happening.  Make sure to watch and be aware of changes so you can nip a problem in the bud before it begins.

Take into account these teen bullying statistics and your child as you navigate through the tough years.  Being aware of what is happening in their life and what warning signs to look for can make a huge difference in the outcome.  Don’t overlook problem areas.  Always stay on top of problems that arise and focus your efforts on showing your children love and acceptance no matter what.
