How Can We Prevent it?

  • Teach our sons that women are not sexual objects, but valued members of society and equals.
  • Teach tolerance and acceptance of all people regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, appearance or sexual preference
  • Teach girls and women they are valued beyond their sexuality.
  • Create Open Communication in your family so no subject is off limits
  • Teach children about sexuality at appropriate ages.  Not just basic “how is a baby made”, but about their bodies, what they will feel, experience and how to deal with those hormones and urges appropriately and safely.
  • Build high self esteem and help them to care for their bodies so body image is not an issue that makes them feel inferior and end up falling victim.
  • Avoid being in compromising places if you are uncertain how to say no or get out of there easily
  • Don’t make sex a dirty subject in your home.  When tweens and teens feel like it is taboo they are unable to communicate fears, issues and bad situations with you.

With the number of rapes increasing every year, it is important that we teach not only our daughters, but our sons about sexuality and what sexual bullying is.  As the LGBT community continues to fight for acceptance, we are also seeing more and more sexual bullying in the form of exclusion and fear tactics regarding homosexuality and other sexual orientations.  The best thing we can do for our children and ourselves it to educate them on sexuality and help them to have confidence in themselves.  Teaching each other to respect other individuals choices, as well as to respect our own bodies will go a long way toward ridding our world of the epidemic of sexual bullying we currently face.

  1. This is going to be one of the harder topics to talk over with my upcoming daughter. I hope my wife and I can handle it well and I hope society starts moving more away from this sort of thing.

  2. I dread this kind of thing when my kids get to middle school/high school age. The scariest part is it’s even occurring in elementary school. Unfortunately, we can’t always prevent what others do to our children, but we can guide our children in the right direction so they don’t do it to others.

  3. This is a great post indeed. Most people don’t think about the different types of bullying. Kudos to you for making people aware. Thanks for sharing.
