If you are a parent of a child in the middle school years, you may need these Tips For Dealing With Bullying In Middle School.  This age can be one of the hardest on kids with all the changes in their bodies, friendships and even education.  Equipping your kids with a strong sense of self and ability to cope with the possibility of bullying is important.

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH BULLYING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Build Their Self Esteem:  Prepare your children by working with them to build up their strengths.  This will prevent them from becoming a victim or a bully.  Enroll them in classes or extra curricular activities they excel in to help them grow and learn more.  Always have positive things to say about their successes.  Let criticism be constructive and help them to learn from mistakes.  Don’t belittle them.

Educate Them On Physical Changes:  One of the biggest changes children see in the middle school years is the onset of puberty.  Each child ages and changes differently, and this can be cause for ridicule and bullying.  Make sure you take the time to sit down with them and talk about puberty, sexuality, physical and emotional changes to expect during this time.  Also work with them to make sure they understand their body will change and grow at a different rate than others.  Help them to embrace their body as it is and to have a good self image.

Keep Open Lines of Communication:  Make sure your kids have a judgement free zone.  This doesn’t mean that you won’t discipline as needed for their actions, but it does mean there will be times they can express themselves, share with you and know you will be there to listen.  If their words upset or concern you, make sure your reaction is not one of anger or frustration, but of concern and love.

Teach Them Proper Ways To Handle Emotions:  One of the biggest struggles kids go through at this age is knowing how to process their emotions.  Work together with them to share proper ways to handle emotions.  This in itself will go a long way toward preventing further issues with bullying in middle school.  A child who knows how to handle and safely express anger, sadness, jealousy and frustration will be healthier.

Work alongside your children to help them become strong individuals who won’t fall victim to the pressures of bullying in middle school.  Not only will they be strong enough to walk away from tough situations, you will know they are not bully’s themselves.  Help your kids shape their character by being available to them as they need you no matter what their age.

  2. Middle School can be rough. Rougher than high school even, I think. Bullying at that age just hits so hard (though trust me, I know it’s never acceptable or easy to deal with at any age).

  3. Urgh, school is such a hard place for children. All of my boys should be pretty well educated in Jiu Jitsu by the time they reach there. Not for the fighting aspect – but for the confidence. Confidence is key at school.

  4. These are great tips. I have 2 kiddos in Middle School and one in High School. I can’t believe how much bullying goes on these days. It’s a shame.

These are great tips, it can be so hard to know what to do as a parent in these situations. I hope my son never gets bullied.

  6. Most young kids don’t know how to express their emotions much and have troubles in speaking up and letting their parents know about everything that happens in school. It’s really good if the kid can take up counseling and have regular communication with parents and teachers.

  7. Keeping lines of communication open is such an important key. Boosting self-esteem is another important key. I am reading a really good book by author Nancy Omeara called, “Creating Hate: How It Is Done, How To Destroy It: A Practical Handbook,” http://www.authornancyomeara.com/ It is useful in anyone’s life.

  8. This list is on-point. I think teaching proper ways of dealing with emotions is one of the best things we can do as parents. I remember letting my emotions get the best of me in a bad situation and it did nothing but pour fuel on the flame.

  9. My son won’t be in middle school for quite some time, but this will be very helpful to look back on in case he does get bullied!
