Secretive online use

Kids are somewhat secretive about their computer usage no matter what but kids that are being bullied usually take it to a different level. If they close screens quickly when you walk by or seem nervous while online, those are common signs. Build trust with your kid but always be aware of what they are doing online. This can be done by keeping all technology like this in public areas of the home.

Depression

Kids that are being cyber bullied will often exhibit signs of depression. In fact, teen depression in some form or another is almost always present in kids that are being bullied online. This is a common sign of many teen problems so be sure to pay attention if your kid seems particularly down.

Lack of appetite

Many kids that are being cyber bullied will stop eating or stop doing other hobbies that they once loved. Cyber bullying can make them begin to challenge their own self worth and that can lead to all kinds of problems.  Eating disorders are common because of a poor self image.

Regression from friends and family

Cyber bullying victims sometimes will stop hanging around the family and friends they once loved to be around. This is a very common sign that something is wrong and cyber bullying is high on that potential list If your kid suddenly stops hanging out with friends or wants little to do with you, you should talk with them and be very observant.

Is uneasy about social functions they normally love

One thing that cyber bullying causes is a complete avoidance of certain social situations. If they are being picked on online, they are going to want to avoid those bullies in real life most of the time. This might mean they leave clubs they had joined, stopped going to school functions or simply spent all their time at home in their room. All of these behaviors are consistent with a child that is being cyber bullied.

Cyber bullying is an often avoided problem in our schools and homes and it is time we paid closer attention. If you see these behaviors in your child, take notice and take action. They may be signs that your child is a victim of cyber bullying.
